proper way of combing hair: down to up or up to down?

there is such a thing as properly brushing or combing hair. which is your pick? if you chose the latter i imagine you're split ends prone... it's down going up: brush the ends first, then the middle part of the hair then the roots. this way there is less stress on the tresses .

Oh I thought the point of brushing was to bring the natural oils from the roots of your hair to your ends. So I've always been brushing roots to tip. Well I get the knots out at the ends first to make brushing easier and then when it's knot free I go roots to end. I have super long hair so its time consuming no matter what.

after the initial combing or brushing the proper way (just to basically unknot the tangles) then it is the up going down to bring the natural oils of the scalp to the hair. but experts still warn of excessive brushing or combing so the old wive's tale of 100 strokes is out .

Oh I see. Well I was always too lazy for the 100 strokes anyway :)

Oh I never knew that. When I first read your discussion I thought "How would I comb my hair down to up?" but after reading your explanation I get it now. The guys or should I say gays in the parlor told me not to rub my hair against the towel because this causes split ends. Well thanks for you additional tip.

and do you know also that if your hair is curly and prone to frizzes they suggest you dry it with a paper towel?

I didn't know that it was suppoes to be like that at all When I grew my hair long, I always combed from the base of my hair to the ends. That's why I had so many split ends. If I knew better, I could still be having my hair long or even longer. Next time, I would try to apply that when I comb my hair and tell that to other people as well like my colleagues or my family members in case they too want to be careful in how to manage their hair. Thank you!

hi ritch, Hihi! down to up? I find it funny! Because I have a very long hair and it will sure get all tangled if I start from the tip of my hair (ends) brushng it upward to my roots. Hihi! I usually brush my hair starting from roots (head) to tip of my hair.

I am not sure if combing your hair down to up is a proper way. I dont know but it doesnt make sense to me. I tried combing my hair down to up after I read this discussion but it just doesnt work at all. I think I will always go for up to down.

If you are having long hair then combing from the root to the tip is the only way.If you do it the other way i.e from tip to the root in one stroke then your hairs are going to be messed up. For boys having short hair it really doesn't matter which way you comb only thing is 'comb according to the way you want your hair to be'. Yes about the split ends, you need to hold your hairs around mid length and comb the tips ,this way the stress is minimised on the root of the hair.
