FTP is the acronym for file transfer protocol. This is a much better way to copy files from your computer to your web server. You will need a program called an FTP client like FileZilla to use FTP. What makes FTP particularly useful is that it gives the webmaster a way to give access to certain parts (i.e., directory) of the web server to other people without giving them the top-level password to the account itself. Often, copying files via FTP is also faster or more efficient because you can select multiple files and copy them in bulk. Most HTTP-based file copying is done one file at a time.

Just a note, using FTP files get uploaded one file at a time too, it's just that with FTP clients you can set to upload many files in one session and also many FTP servers can resume an incomplete transfer. :D @iGimp01: almost any host will give you FTP access, the only thing is that not all will let you use an anonymous account so you won't be able to share that account with others.
