I would say that in order to successfully promote articles or posts on social networking sites, you need to have quite a few friends or followers. But on social bookmarking sites that is not as important. Both are great methods of promoting your work though!

In addition to what scheng1 has mentioned above, Facebook is a social networking site. It is a place where you can add friends, chat with them, send messages, play games. If you write articles, there are some apps there which can give an update whenever you publish a new article. I know Triond has one. If not, you can still add your links there.
Twitter is what they call micro-blogging. You send updates about what you are doing and so forth. Apart from telling people what you eat for breakfast, Twitter is another great way to promote your articles. You can tweet about your latest article on Twitter. Unlike Facebook, there is much less interaction on Twitter. People follow you or you follow them, that's about it.
Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit are social bookmarking sites. They allow you to send feeds from your blog or article pages. You can also send links to your articles. It's a great way to direct traffic to your written work.
All these sites allow you to share your articles with other people. It's just that it's done in slightly different manners, that's all. Hope that explanation helps.

Hi Jasmeena, social networking sites are mainly for people to associate with each other.
You gain friends and share information. That is the main purpose.
Social bookmarking websites is for you to post a link, so that people searching for information can find the information easily.
You can use social networking to gain followers to your blogs. Just remember that they come based on their relationship with you.
You can use social bookmarking websites to get backlinks to your blog posts.
