lucky people and not so lucky people

Have you ever experienced that someone under you was stepping up a ladder in his/ her carrier so fast, that you were left behind several steps? I did. Like most people who ever experienced it, I got mad, grumbled and tried to seek supports from other colleagues. I put in words that others began questioning the boss' motive in promoting someone from under me into a higher position. I thrived in others' sleazy suspicion of the way this someone took to get a promotion. I became the monster. Knowing there was no chance the decision ever changes, as what the boss said is the rule, I pitifully admitted that there are people who get lucky and there are people who are not so lucky. What's the difference between these two people, shame that I found this out much later in my carrier, is gut. Lucky people, as I named them, have gut. They have gut to present themselves as a potential executive ready to take on higher challenges. They have gut in challenging themselves with skills essential for the position, like: skill in speech, skill in dealing with people and skill in organizing and motivation a team. They have gut to enhance their networks as a source of chances and information. They also have gut in stepping on others and ignoring their feelings to get a promotion. I did not write the last one as a censure. It does not pay to wait for others to open up chances for us. We have to find those chances ourselves and act accordingly.

hi jennyze, I did not experienced such situation while working with my colleagues, but I think, I will just act exactly as what you did because it seems to be so unfair. Your post reminds me of what happened to our present government here in the Philippines. Our president just appointed her manicurist to be one of her cabinet members who has the responsibility to take care billions of money. It makes me so disappointed with the kind of government we are having now. Just imagine, a cabinet member who will handle big amount of money is just a manicurist of the president who does not have any experience with stuff like that. Well, if that manicurist can present proofs of her educational attainment and experiences, and proofs that she is qualified for the job, I will calm down. I will be happy with her. But they show none. I was totally dismayed. She just got the position because she is close to the president and nothing else.I agree with you that some people just attain the position they are in now because they are close with the people who has the power to give them the job and not because of their qualifications. We cannot get away with that. That is a natural condition also in our country. Today's trend is that, it doesn't matter what you know or what you can do, what matter is whom you know.

Wow, it's too bad, Annierose. A government staff is supposed to think big for the prosperity of the country. It seems this kind of thing happened with developing countries. You had just had the election yesterday, hadn't you? Yet, your people experienced the disappointment, already. What can I say? I cannot say my country is better than yours. He..he..

yes, we had the election yesterday. Sad to say that the person we voted for president seems to be not the one who will lead us starting by June. I admire him because I know he fits to be the president because I saw the qualifications of a good leader on him. However, he got lower ratings because of crab mentality. His opponents always throw accusations with him knowing he has an edge for becoming a president. Well, I hope someday, somehow, our country can get out of this economic crisis. I do not believe much of the person who seems to be the next president however, I will just do my best as a citizen. I am just uncertain if he can handle Philippines with some negative attitudes I had noticed with him. He is not as brave and as dedicated as the one we voted for.It seems to be he just run for president because of the people surrounding him. I hope he will not like Pres. GMA who will appoint people in the government even without the necessary qualifications.

Well, no one can say who will be better in the top seat. Too many aspects around the tops that would drag someone back down real fast if he/she is not careful... hence the stagnation.

You are digging, my friend. Well, yes, someone would always climbing up using her face and body cause we all know that is a man's weakness since the dark ages... some would trampled their friends to get a promotion, and some more are like us who let it go if it is not meant to be.

really annoying if have experience incidents like you mean, but what to do if had be the decision your boss ? I think, that can be done only intropeksi yourself what had been your advantages and disadvantages. Maybe your boss does not see your advantages.

Yes, it was annoying when it happened. I did not have the gut to show my advantages to my boss, at the time it was like showing off. But I understand better, now.

It depends upon your tenacity and your ability to take risks that's why there are people who's faster going up the ladder. I don't think luck alone can do this. There are people who's willing to risk their others, even their friends, just to move up and frankly, they interest me a lot.

You are right, it is not merely luck. As, I stated they have guts to do anything to step higher on the ladder. Well, some people are not that ambitious I guess. I am one of the later.
