Is it possible for anyone new to eBay to make any decent money?

I had the idea of trying to make a bit of money on eBay by buying things in bulk, breaking down the package into small lots and selling on eBay. W£hen I see the competition my idea withers away. Postal charges add so much to the cost away of the sold item that it is uneconomic to buy on the site. Making headway as a new seller against established sellers with massive feedback results. If I sell something and then, for no good reason the buyer is unhappy, even after receiving a refund, that person can totally destroy you on eBay. I hesitate to put money into a business that would be so vulnerable to dissatisfied customers bad-mouthing you.

To sell stuff on ebay you must walk a fine line. Selling stuff at a good price with reasonable shipping are important facts. The other thing is that it needs to be something that is popular at the time. I know a couple of years back I was able to get ahold of some items that were very popular at a reasonable price. Stuck them on ebay and made more than twice what I had paid. But if I tried to list those same items today, I would lose money. As for negative feedback, as long as you do exactly what you claim you should not have any problem with that.

Thanks for those thoughts. I did do some research into finding a product to sell but the research is so time consuming, and by the time I would obtain supplies, the fad may have passed, very risky to my way of thinking. The negative feedback is threatening because you have no appeal, no way of defending youself, you do seem to put your business at the mercy of anyone having a bad day.
