Last Sunday, my boyfriend and I, together with my mom, went to Pampanga. Pampanga, a culinary center, is a province in the Philippines. It is very famous for its unique and delicious dishes. For lunch, we had 4 dishes including a fried stuffed frog. I personally loved it. My mom was hesitant to taste it at first because it is new to her. But when she tasted it, she agreed that it was delicious. We can also find camaru, or fried crickets, in Pampanga. Have you tried any of these exotic foods? Or any other exotic dishes? How was it?

Here in the US you dont find many places that serve frogs or crickets. I know they do have places that have frog legs. But I have never tried them. The most exotic thing i have ever eaten (which I know isn't very exotic) was calamari or fried either octupus or squid. not sure which. I didnt like it. I would probably try frog legs if I knew of a place that served it. As far as crickets go i dont think i would try them.

calamares are usually found in every street vendors now a days, together with the all time favorite and most exotic food of all time in the philippines and probably around the world, the BALUT

I love calamari, too :) Squid is actually one of my favorite foods. I just don't like it when it is already cold after grilling. It makes the squid rubbery and hard to eat. Cuttle fish is also like squid. It has a rubbery texture but it is juicier :)

I love calamari. Most restaurants here in the Phil serve calamari as fried squid and not octopus. My girlfriend loves before to eat calamari cooked just along busy streets, but I would always warn her not to for she might get sick.

I've eaten a lot of exotic foods and frog legs is one of my favorite. Its pretty delicious. I tried it when I was a child, I still remember that day because I got bitten by a goose (serves me right for disturbing it, haha!). Anyway, my uncle tricked me into eating the frog legs, he said it was chicken but I was suspicious at first since its too small to be chicken wings. But what the hey, I just ate it. And it tasted good! I ate it with out most vigor thinking it was really chicken wings. Then my dad dropped the bomb laughing but by that time, I didn't really mind because it tasted good. As for crickets, I have not the chance to try it out. I've eaten fried 'butod' with onions, tastes pretty good especially with the onions. Butod is the local name for sago worms. From what I have read, its an excellent source of protein and a nice snack, have to be careful though not to eat the head because its not suppose to be eaten. Other exotic food? In Borneo, exotic is basically our food but we seldom make it our daily food since our cooking has assimilated with the chinese cooking. A few of the exotic food are butod, bat stew (yes, its nice), labi-labi (soft shell tortoise, haven't really eaten this), snake soup with turmeric (this is heavenly, taste like eels, if you haven't eaten eels, taste like fish), ginger crocodile, and deer meat. Deer meat is nice, aside from the occasional buck shot still in the meat though

Props to your dad :)) But the frog looks like a frog, isn't it? haha but it is still yummy. Bat?? Bat is a delicacy in Borneo? I wonder how it tastes like. I don't want how bat looks like... it is scary. How about its wings? Do they get fried, too? You guys have really exotic food there. I wonder how snake and deer taste like. Snake is kind of long. Is it good for one whole family? haha

A frog does look like a frog but I was 5 or 6 at the time, if my dad said it was beef, I would have probably believed him haha! Bats are a tricky ones, you would need a long time to cook it since the meat is quite tough, you would have to be careful of its organs and not cut it. If the bile were to spill and touch the meat ( can't remember the name of the organ in english), then the meat would taste very very bitter. Deer tastes like lamb but have to be careful when chewing the meat. Sometimes, buckshots from the hunter's shotgun is still in the meat and you could break a tooth if you accidentally chomped on that.

hi pierrella, i have tried frogs already and i must say that its really good and i come to like it. actually its one of my favorites when i was younger coz we have lots of it in our place. when i was younger i am living near the rice fields and so there are season that there's a lot of frogs there, those edible ones of course. hehe and i like it when mom use it for adobo, or just cook it with miswa. its really great. and sometimes we do catch it our own! i haven't tried crickets yet but i have seen it on tv already, and for now i can't say if i can eat them. but i remember when i am younger there's also this another looks like insect that we eat in our village, they call it 'suhong' but i don't know what to call it in other term. but all i know is that there's a lot of them during rainy season.

yeah! but that was before...when i am still a kid. it saddens me that our village now is very far from what it is before. now, those rice fields are already converted to subdivisions. i agree frog meat is like that of chicken but its more firm & tasty.

I haven't tried any but my hubby said that he likes to eat frogs because it is much more tastier than chicken. I don't know about crickets and I am so curious to try the jumping chicken frogs i mean. I wonder where in Pampanga do they serve that kind of exotic dish. I would be glad also if anyone here knows where I can buy such delight, hope it is also available in Makati or Manila area.

I think all restaurants/carinderias in pampanga serve betute (frogs) and camaru (crickets) :) I've tried frog legs in Makati. Visit "Fish Out of Water" in Greenbelt 5. They serve it :) But it is much more expensive compared to the ones in Pampanga. In Pampanga, it is just P75 per piece. In Greenbelt, it is around P300-400 for 3 pieces.

I haven't tried any of that. I'm from the Philippines too. I've only had 'balot' as the most exotic food I've eaten. Maybe one day when I visit Pampanga, I'll try that cricket thing and ...the frog. I'll take you word for it.

Yup, let me know how it goes :) Eat the frog first if you can't really take the looks of the cricket. It looks like cockroach.

Hey Pierrella, I'm sorry to say but the idea of exotic food disgusts me. Its the poor animals. I'm a non-vegetarian but I prefer to stick to the normal meats like chicken, beef, pork and seafood. My friend and I once went to a restaurant that had duck and rabbit on the menu, so wanted to try it out as she heard it was very tasty but I said a flat no to her. I can't stand the thought of eating duck and rabbit, those poor innocent animals. I know I may sound like a hypocrite cause I don't like people hurting animals and killing them. But at the same time I can't give up non veg food. But somehow chicken and the rest doesn't sound bad cause I guess that's the common food everywhere. I just wish that they are treated with some dignity atleast till they are alive. I am against animal cruelty which is very rampant in Asian countries especially cause of the exotic tastes of people. Just wish all people had a heart to think about poor innocent animals!!

Rabbit?? I haven't heard any place here that serves rabbit. That is weird. But when it comes to ducks, there are a lot of Chinese restaurants serving pecking ducks here. It is actually one of the main dishes. It's a favorite in Chinese restaurants but it is really expensive.

I haven't got the chance to taste that delicacies. I know i can't eat it. But they say the frog that they cook is the one fatter than the usual frog that we see normally in the city. that Frog meat's taste is not differ from the taste of chicken. And the cricket is really delicious, according to a friend.

I haven't tried this kind of food. Many people says that exotic foods are delicious but I don't really like to try, my stomach can't take it. Hahahaha.

I'm kind of old-fashioned. I've heard a lot of stuffs like these crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, fried and sold. Some fried in batter. Friends who travelled abroad said they tasted good are rich in nutrients. I'm not sure if the latter is true. Frog legs either roasted or barbequed are quite common here. But not stuffed frog. That's something new to me. But whether its crickets, grasshoppers or frogs I don't think I could get myself to eat them, at least for now.

I have heard that frogs and crickets are delicious to eat. I haven't tried eating or even just tasting any these foods, however, I have tried eating dogs and monitor lizard when I was still a kid, they are also delicious. Killing and eating fogs was prohibited and stopped now in my place and I guess in other parts of the Phils as well, due to illness it might caused.
