Why doesn't web search work?

After the last question about getting paid to search I went and did a search. I'm lazy and use the google shortcut bar on the browser usually. Made sure it was searching web and not discussions and typed in my search terms..... However it won't give me any results. I mean no results. I've searched for things i want and the 'No results were found for the specified search criteria' meant i tried more reliable stuff like shapes and company names like google, but still no results! Please tell me i'm being stupid and dumb! Delete this question if it's annoying. but Please, how do i fix it?
