Is education deteriorating or are the kids just distracted by technology?

In this information age, at first glance, it seems that the children are equipped with so many methods by which they can learn. However, when evaluated about their knowledge, it appears that this generation is not as smart as they appear to be. Where lies the blame -- the schools / teachers , distractions from technology or the learners themselves?

There are just too many things to learn. There are too many things to teach as well. Priorities have to be exercised prudently on the part of schools and educators. It may be difficult to balance everything: for the economy, social skills and social studies, etc. As both parents are very busy nowadays teaching is solely left to the schools and day care or tuition centers. With little or no encouragement from the homes learning can also be tough. Pupils today may be faced with many gadgets like psp, mobile phones with cameras, laptops and internet to distract them from learning. Ultimately it is attitude that makes one a better student, a better educator or a better parent.

Hello joram, I believe what is needed is guidance, technology simply is spoiling this generation and most of them are blindly depending on it. Yes, it's true that technology distracts kids. for example, my nephew and niece can't afford to study during their summer times because of game boy, PSP, Playstation 2 and TV cables that involve watching cartoons all the time. i feel sad for them because they're too attached to it. i believe teachers (each one) must find a way to motivate the children into more studying. i believe tutoring is one.

From my perspective and observation, the younger generation has been spoiled with tv shows flooded with pics and sounds, they have got used and addicted to these, without which they would find it hard to concentrate on. that is why nowadays teachers try every means to add color and sound to their lecture ppts, othrvise, no matter how vivid and informative the lecture might be, there is always absent-mindness and distraction among students.

No, these things have nothing to do with the quality of education of children. If kids are properly motivated to do well at school, then distractions like computer games won't stand a chance. We need to motivate children to study hard so that their dreams will eventually become a reality.

I think it's a little bit of both. No offense to any teacher or any teaching school but honestly speaking there are many teachers who can be really b-o-b-o. And then the kids are also distracted by technology as well. And I believe that the school system has changed a lot as well. the time the children spends at school is short. and stuff like that so I guess its a combination of so many factors.

I think, u are highly mistaken..This generation is highly skillful.. This current generation has more knowledge, they are just flying high.. But u are partially right, what they did in older days was they taught every basic methodologies and with that the students developed their skills, but what they do now is, simply ignore he basics and give them the extreme technology.. Even i have been given advanced technology to learn.. If u compare an Engineer of 1990's with me (2010) he will be strong in his basics though he might not be equipped with current status.. The main reason is the study Material or Syllabus they give to read.. The syllabus is heavy and it does cover all latest and they ignored the older things..

Technologies come and go and there are still students graduating and using it at the same time so I do not think this is making a great impact on them, however there are those who think that studies is a priority over technology whereas others think the contrary so this is the problem with those who are unable to cope with studies and new technologies.

I think this it's a case of information overload. Teachers are trying to teach a lot of things in so short a time. Adding to the fact that kids nowadays use their brains more even when playing. The brain can only take so much at a time, we can feed a lot of info but if the kid is not interested those info will just go to the short term memory and will eventually be forgotten. Before, kids are given the time to have a break at school by playing physical outdoor games which gave a chance for the brain to relax and focus more on the strain of the game. But now, after school children go to their PSP or whatever console games they have. There's just too many distraction today compared before.

Our education is deteriorating! And actually our kids are even more becoming intelligent because of technology. Our teachers now a days have less in most things. They have less salary, less materials and tool in teaching, less training, less benefits, and others. But they also have more on something, more students per class, more jobs specially during the election, and more needs in personal life. The foundation of education are the teachers, and they are being treated less.

education is probably not deteriorating, but the method of teaching probably is. there are many teaching methods available but the majority still use the traditional way of teaching. i believe that it is not really that effective anymore and it may even stunt the educational growth of students. on the other hand, this may not only be the cause. over-dependence in technology and maybe even other matters (society in general?) keep the children from learning to the fullest capacity. i dont know, some may disagree but these are my opinions about it. i'm still optimistic though that given more importance, our educational system will get better in the future.

The technology now is highly advanced but too risky to get involved... Kids right now are used to video games and more of games which is available online. It's not the school whom we can put the blame but to the parents who should be the first teachers.. They should discipline their kids well and there are a lot of options to do that not with a help with a nanny... Let's say that both parents are really busy but that is not an excuse to do their obligation to guide their children on what to do. Options could be scheduling of TV hours, playing are only on weekends and giving right instructions on time management. Kinda difficult to follow, but surely it works!

We should properly guide and teach our children in this information age, on how to properly use and take advantage of the various opportunities that technology brings and also help them get rid of the deteriorating effects of improper or abusive use of technology, in order to uplift their knowledge and potential.

it is a bit of both included. We also, the elders, who have completed our schooling and education, to be blamed. I have never spent my evenings inside my home. I was always in the play ground. And, today, I can gladly claim GOOD HEALTH. but, for my kids now, it is tuition, and then, TELEVISION and then, COMPUTER /Playstation video games, etc. Even teachers are not so creative. There are no botanical tours. no excursions into wilderness now. only science quiz, or new projects to develop new technology. Technology is a boon, as also a PUNISHMENT on young and creative lives. thanks for a nice topic.
