Why are guinea pigs named so?

Some people have guinea pigs. How come guinea pigs are named "guinea pigs"? I've heard of one theory that explorers found these animals being raised and eaten like "pigs" by the natives of "Guiana". I'd like to believe this isn't true. poor guinea pigs! Do you have an idea how the name came to be?

it sounds like a possible answer actually so maybe you are right, its certainly interesting theory, i like guiena pigs they are so cute....they are chubby and squeal so maybe thats also why they have the pig bit in the name

No not sure but I do recall them being considered a delacacy in some country as the gal on the episode of Globe Trekker was served one. EWWW...
