Is it true? Well as the world know, It was Sebastian El Cano of Spain who first circumnavigate the world. He was a man of Ferdinand Magellan who sailed from Spain and reach the Philippines accidentally. Magellan was killed in an island in the Philippines and later El Cano, leave the Philippines and sailed onward to fully circumnavigate the world. But there is this unnamed guy who serve as slave in this voyage. He was the slave of Antonio Pigafetta, the man who documented the voyage. This slave served as the interpreter when they reach the Philippines. So the mere fact that, that interpreter knew the language of the natives in the Philippines, he had been there, or even more he came somewhere near there. It was believed that this slave had been transported from somewhere in the Philippines, to Spain via China or west side. So when he reach Spain he had already traveled half of the globe and when he reach the Philippines (east side), he fully circumnavigate the world, in which El Cano was still halfway. Well those are just speculations, but it you will try to look at it deeper, it might be true.
