Is it possible for a nail to come away from the toe? My dog Spike's little toe is injured and he howls/yelps if anyone touches it roughly or pulls, and the fact that he is 13 years old; yeah, I don't know what to do since he's so old that drugs could probably kill him. He's been in that many scraps, large scar on his stomach; floppy ear etc. He's a pitbullx I think, or a bull terrierx; never been sure of his breed.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that! :( I don't know about dogs but I did have an experience like that when I was younger, but it was my fingernail, not the toenail. It just came off after a couple of weeks being injured. It happened because I was playing with a hammer and instead of pounding the nail, I pounded on my finger instead! By accident of course! Hehehe! My mom treated with hot water. The nail became dark after a few days because of the blood clot. And then after a few weeks, the nail just came off. It grew back a fresh nail after a month I think. But in the case of your dog...I really don't know if it still applies. Have you brought it to the vet? I think he's the best person to treat your dog :)
