Stigmata

Padre Pio's wounds - Stigmata

On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio celebrated Mass. He was overcome with drowsiness. He felt that all his internal and external senses were immersed in indescribable stillness. He felt that absolute silence surrounded him. He suddenly felt that he was filled with great peace and abandonment. While this was happening, he saw in his vision a mysterious person stood in front of him. He had seen him earlier on August 5 1918. This time he noticed that his hands, feet and sides were dripping blood. Soon the vision disappeared but to his surprise that his own hands, feet and sides were dripping blood. He began to experience it almost every day, especially from Thursday evening until Saturday. Reverend Padre Pio had suffered from Stigmata. There have been similar incidents all over the world. If a person looks intently at Jesus’ crucifix and feels the pain Jesus had suffered at the time of his death, he is likely to develop scars at his hands, feet and sides. Most probably, his own sympathetic nervous system releases toxins to heal the imaginary wounds and on finding none, creates scars. What is your opinion on this?

I personally believed on everything that happened to Padre Pio. His extraordinary devotion and faith rendered him such unexplained human phenomenon. Physiologically his bleeding could have made him anemic yet his body functioned well with all those blood dripping out. I Think Stigmata is a gift from God. A person is so blessed to experience what happened to Jesus thousands of years ago. Its only a matter of faith and less science.

I too believe in everything that happened to Padre Pio. His sympathy for Jesus' sufferings is remarkable. Not every body can experience Jesus' pain the way he had experienced.

I have been trying to look for some answers online and some scientific explanations in vain. But most people say that Stigmata is only an incident created by our own mind, the mind controls everything in us. There is intense belief/imagination involved that the mind creates the reality of it. Thats how powerful the human mind is.

You are right dennis. While the person is commiserating with Jesus sufferings and concentrating on his wounds the intense belief/imagination causes mind to believe that there are wounds on the person's body, which needs to be healed. At mind's behest the sympathetic nervous system gives directions to liver to release insoluble fibrin, which helps in blood clotting. This insoluble fibrin on reach the imaginary scars on finding no scars causes scar and cause them to bleed. Therefore, I say it has a medical answer and there is no spiritual answer to it.
