philippines has this means of transportation called public utility jeepney "PUJ" "jeep" for short. the king of the road! what could be more interesting in it? well, i can say it has been ever enjoyed specially those teenagers and young ones to ride with jeep cause here in manila, there's this kind of jeep that would go like one of those rides found in theme parks where you'll enjoy being swayed when you are riding it. well,not all people liked this kinds of jeep which sometimes called like "patok na jeep".these are the ones that have large speakers inside and really sounds loudly,you can't even hear your seatmate talking.sometimes i just don't like riding in it,but if i was in rush i would love to ride there to get in my destination the fastest...not minding the scary thing where the jeep would go bunking,if that's the term where the jeep would go fast like side to side leaving its passengers swaying also. in our village,we have no kind of this types.i can tell you,our village's jeeps are like few ones and sometimes there were those which is like decayed ones,scary to ride on and it's driver is like too old,i can't imagine how many hours before you get to your destination when you ride there. what about you? do you like riding in jeeps? can you share some of your experiences while riding there? any accidents in "patok" ones?

hi annavi, since my elementary days till now i am usually using the jeepney as mode of transport. its cheaper and kinda convenient for me. its fun yes but sometimes irritating as well. there's a lot of things we can see and learn & experience when we are taking the jeepney, we were able to meet different kinds of people in there, some are friendly some are annoying. when i am in college, my classmates and i always have fun riding in a jeepney we don't mind if the driver drives so fast as long as we are delivered safe in our destination...haha although its scary sometimes but we can still have a good laugh on it right after. i have experience riding in a nice jeepneys like that one that you posted and also i have experience riding in a kind that's almost wrecked? haha like we feel like we are having tetanus when we get wounded there or its like upon looking on the jeepney you would think that it will be impossible to reach our destination coz it might blast anytime! lol! just kidding!

hehehe...well well, even i myself laughs with this and with the thought of my experiences in a jeepney. its funny that sometimes some even quarrels in there just for a little reason of passing the fare! and have you experienced when riding in a jeep and its already full? that some can't seat properly then what the driver will do to move the passengers is to break suddenly? haha funny. and some drivers are also annoying when they so fast not noticing the humps...and some passenger's head will hit the jeepney roof! haha that's annoying but funny sometimes! if i were to point out one by one funny & annoying things that happens in the jeepney, i guess it will take me years...lol! yeah yeah, it makes me bored as well when its too slow and makes me want to shout at the driver and said for god's sake...im already late...hehe yeah sure, thanks for the invite. my pleasure to be your friend.

yeah, many times my mom has been one of those who quarrel with other passengers...hehe but those were in the past, coz my mom when she has her 'topak' she's really a snob...hehe but she don't want to be snubbed as well...huh! true! hehe and i know that you also know those funny and annoying things that happens on a jeepney...hmmmm like when someone beside you is sleeping and they are already leaning to you! aw! i hate that. hehe and when we are already late, we can't afford to be choosy! haha but here in my place now, when i am in rush, i'd rather take a bus or taxi. coz they don't have much stop overs to pick passengers. oh well, thanks for the kind words, and i can see that you are having more and more friends now...you are also a good person.

you make me laugh,my friend! thank you for the wonderful thought. i really loved hearing from you. well,as you said it's fun to ride to those of really fast ones specially when you are really in a rush and hurried yourself to work.sometimes riding taxi or fx would left your pocket empty rather than riding in jeeps. yes,in wrecked ones,it's really funny to ride those cause as you said it may blast anytime!.but sometimes you really have no choice but to ride those.specially in our neighborhood,there are jeeps of those kinds.really funny and irritating cause i might get late because of it's driver really old one.feels like decades before i arrive at my destination.sometimes i cut my trip just to avoid my irritation and for me not to be late. i hope we could be friends here.

yes i have so many that it will take a long time to tell all of them...anyway, i'm just gonna share some of them. i find it funny when i'm riding a jeepney with some hilarious college student cause it's really fun riding with students joking inside the jeepney. one time, on my way to school when i was still a student, the jeep had it's break, i mean the sudden stop. we were full inside but when it had a break, the bench became half full because we were compressed by the force. instead of being annoyed we just all laughed.

yeah,i also experienced the same thing,being squeezed at the end of the jeep is not really funny though cause if you are the one who's in the very end i guess it would be such a hurtful thing. well,it also depends on how many the passengers are,and if you are at the first seats,you'll just laugh on those who got compressed.but sometimes it leaves wounds to those who really got hurt,bad thing also to laugh at them. well,it's a wonderful feeling to not be annoyed also. sometimes there were also passengers who would not sit properly that's why makes the jeep really hard to seat on. when sudden stop occurs,you'll come to realize that you can actually sit with your whole butt on.

can you share something experience you have? do you have something funny to share while your inside the jeepney? well,sometimes i saw people who were like parents in a jeep. she was the mother and carrying a baby.but she was not taking good care of it,just texting and making fun of other children. what a disgraceful mother! sometimes there were also poor children who suddenly wiped your feet,one time i have been surprised cause i was looking at the other side,the boy wiped my shoe to my surprise,he's so lucky i might have been kicked him cause i really got shocked! there were also people who are like not knowing where would they go. feeling worried and makes them look funny in a way. i also remember sometimes when i have been in a jeep and together with my relatives we go out of town,using jeep.feels free to ride on it cause we own the jeep,whatever we do we can do.

I never like riding jeepneys, cause most of the time they are uncomfortable BUT they are cheap, and as you said, they can take you to your destination in no time, so I still ride them. LOL. I haven't had any accidents yet, thankfully, but I had my share of jeepney drivers who thinks that they own the road, and other cars would just let him pass by. Geezzz, I think jeepney drivers are the worst of them all, well, they are in close contention with Ordinary bus drivers. LOL.

I have the chance to ride this "patok" jeep when i resided in marikina for awhile. I can say that i enjoyed the ride because it's fast which means i can reach my destination earlier. It's loud, the base of some of these PUJ you can literally hear a few kilometers away and i like loud music. What i don't like is the possibility of an accident because these vehicles are like bullet trains in the streets. That's why i always sit in the middle, if not at the rear and seldom at the front seats. So far, all the rides i had were safe ones. What i'm afraid is taking a bus ride along edsa nowadays. I don't usually pray when i ride a patok, but with the buses in EDSA i always made sure that do it.

i resided in concepcion for a few months several years back. That time i was still working at a call center and my shift starts around 6 am so riding a patok is to my advantage since it just took a few minutes from marikina to edsa. Patoks are fast even when there's traffic, just imagine riding one at around 4 am in the morning. Every ride seems like the last one i'll have . at the speed were travelling it really seems impossible that anyone will live if there's an accident.

yeah,patok ones are really fast and that's what called them king of the road. i live near concepcion,and yes,i've tried riding to patok ones,those where from fortune and montalban once.but in our village,there was nothing of patok ones.just normal jeeps and sometimes there were also kinda wrecked ones,with rusty handles,scary to ride on! i guess no one got accidents there cause it was very slow to move,takes decades before you arrive to your destination...

hi ybong, you reside in marikina before? i was near there. yeah,that's why there's lots of chances i happen to ride patok jeeps. well, there's scary enough specially when there's old passengers. sometimes i just don't like loud music,when i feel like being at peace. though sometimes,i just don't bother how loud it is,it depends on my moods. but there were also some jeeps which have sounds like of "jologs" were i really don't like to hear. sometimes i think why are filipinos being corny most of the times with these types of songs? i'm happy you didn't have accidents.i have been to a jeep which got bumped to others though it's not patok. some jeeps were just not careful that's why passengers have nothing to do but to transfer somewhere else.

yeah,there will always have this time of the day.specailly when you're really in a rush to get to your destination. and sometimes it's very hard to wait and ride for a public jeepney. you don't have ac hoice but to squeeze yourself just to get in and don't mind people if you hurt them or what,just as long as you get in and go to your destination as fast as it could be.

Yes, I love riding the jeepney as long as I am not in a hurry. Jeepneys are a microcosm of the working society. It is a glimpse of our working class. I have to admit that I enjoy listening to people talking to each other inside jeepneys. It is there that I hear the opinions of real people and they can be funny most of the time. It is also a minefield for anthropology. You get to understand society and some its customs. An example is the immense trust that we have as Filipinos. The driver does not know if you paid for your way or you shortchanged him by getting off farther than what you really paid for. There is also the way we pass on the payment of the people at the back to the driver. There are so many philosophical implications that we can discuss, but suffice to say that jeepneys reflect a part of our culture.
@annavi23 (6522)

9 Jun 10
yes,you could learn things from other passengers too. some issues about surroundings,environments or politicians and what's happening about the country. yes,there were people who shortchanged their fares. some drivers just don't think of it. there were also drivers who just get fares from passengers without even counting them. weird driver!

I don't have a car and it's too expensive to ride a cab to go to work and back home so I am left with the jeepneys. I like riding it specially when there are not much passengers. But when it gets tight, I sort of get irate praying that I get to my destination quickly. I highschool, I prefer riding the newer PUJs with loud sound systems. I would spend a lot of time waiting for it rather than riding the old, rusty ones. Ha! And I still do sometimes, when I'm not in a hurry.

yeah, i felt funny when riding those rusty ones,seems like ages before getting to your destination. but sometimes i do appreciate them if i would like to pass time,but if i'm in a hurry,of course i would ride in a patok one.of course,still pray for our safety when the bunking starts going...

No I really don't enjoy a jeepney ride. First its always cramp. I hate it when they try to squeeze, say, 9 people in a seat when there are already 2 big people sitting there. There are also times that the driver drives too fast. Sometimes too fast that you will pray for your dear life. What I just like in jeepneys is that the fair is cheap and its one of the fastest means of transportation here in our country.
@annavi23 (6522)

9 Jun 10
yes,it's one of the fastest means of transportation but sometimes patok ones where really like those of risking your own life just to get to your destination,and when you happen to arrive at your destination,you might wanna kiss the ground and say "thank GOD, i'm still alive!" yes,i agreew ith about the number of passengers in a row. they would say it would be 9 but if there were two big people sitting,of course you might wanna count them as three or four,right? it's not by the number,it's by the size of the passengers!

Well, not sure about those from the higher social class.. =) Here in my place, the best jeeps are the one's mostly made in stainless. I enjoy riding it because you get to experience every bit of happenings, from getting to know your fellow passengers and from sharing some stuffs about current issues here in the country.:) I even know a couple, who fell in love and married each other after they met inside these "steel wonders."

Well, here in our place, i don't like riding a jeep because drivers wait for more passengers for, like, 20 minutes or more, making you late for your appointments. Well, it depends really upon the driver but most of them do so. Sometimes the RTA is helpful because then drivers won't wait too long at a certain place.haha! I have no choice really because I haven't got a car so I ride it everyday to and from work. What I am afraid of while commuting are the snatchers. They are abundant in our place. I'm ashamed to admit this, but it is the truth. I avoid getting out my phone while inside the jeep and I also don't wear shiny gold jewelry for fear that one of the snatchers is riding the same jeep.

hi emerillus, i guess we have the same place, well, here in our place,we also do wait til the jeep loads many passengers. and it's like 30 minutes or more sometimes. really irritating to wait long hours. specially when you are in a rush. we have no choice also same like you i don't have my own car to travel for my own. it also depends on drivers sometimes if they got complains from the passengers,then they go. your profile shows you live in cagayan de oro,which is very far from our place. yes, we can't have freedom sometmes to use our gadgets cause we never know who has bad intentions with that,specially in provinces like you used to live. same in manila,most bad people are loitering there,and you don't know who's who when your in the public,so it's better to keep yourself safe,not to show your gadgets in public places for it will be somehow a threat to your life. i even got my cellphone snatched also once when i'm riding a jeepney,it was a woman who got it just as i thought i have carefully placed it in my bag,she had the chance to get it from my bag,without me noticing it. so,we really have to be careful riding in jeepney and everytime we are in public places.

no doubt jeepneys are a convenient way to get around. but i tend to choose the ones i ride in. i hate the ones with loudspeakers and blasting music that make my chest and head pound and vibrate. i also hate the very long ones that make paying very inconvenient. i don't like it when people have to pass the money from one person to the next until it reaches the driver. they also tend to overload the jeep so that sometimes only one fourth of the passenger's butt is actually seated.
@annavi23 (6522)

yes,you know my dear we have nothing to do with it,that's what are jeeps for! specially public jeeps. i also don't like loudspeakers,makes my body vibrate when i really don't feel like it,and makes my heart pumping also. i hate it! so much loudness can cause noise pollution. passing money from one person to the next until it reaches the driver also is tiring sometimes cause not all people would like to pass it on,there were just pretending and ignoring people's fares and worse if your fare would not go to driver cause someone might own it and shoot it in their pockets,which is really annoying! kinda thieves on the jeep! yes,they always tend to overload the jeep which looks like sardines in a can. yeah,i have experienced riding where i can only sit one fourth of my butt,really aching when you have been there for at least 10 minutes or more. really hate it specially when there's no more seat but the driver still forced passengers to squeeze themselves.it's like a juicer which extracts people.eeww. i also don't like men/guys who are not gentleman nowadays,whatever it is,if it's jeep,bus,trains. they just don't mind girls/elderly who are not properly seated or not seated at all. i guess it's a proper way to be gentleman. which is sadly,they are only few of them nowadays.:(

Hi.... Jeepneys have always been part of us Filipinos. Yes, jeepneys are inexpensive means of going from one place to another. There are times I enjoy riding the jeep especially if the weather is not that bad because passengers would not sit in skin-to-skin contact..One thing I love in jeepneys is we get to at least meet acquaintances in every journey..The worst things i hate in jeepneys are snatchers and thieves. and another thing, the dizzy feeling when you would sit next to a person with body odor.

hi rhaze, i also don't like skin to skin contact. sometimes there were guys who are like maniac and stick their skin to yours and rub it like you didn't know it. such a disgusting experience. it always happens in crowded buses or jeepneys,well also in trains,my friend! yes,sometimes we just get surprised when we found we have been riding to a jeep where our lost friends are there. such a nice experience. despite our busy schedules,we get to contact them,in sudden situations. yeah,i also hate thieves.well, you didn't know who they are when you are riding in public vehicles. there will always be bad ones there,you just don't know when will they attack. i have sensed sometimes of this one.when i have an instinct that someone is with me riding in the jeep,i would somehow transfer jeep or be really careful in a way. but sometimes i just ignore that instinct then i have my cellphone lost inside the jeep. from that day on,i make sure i would trust my instincts.it's better to be careful than not. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2330708.aspx

Oh I LOVE riding jeeps! They're easy to access and the way that it encourages a sense of community. I have a privileged upbringing, but my parents taught me to commute so that I won't have to rely on being driven around so much. Now mom and dad aren't commuters, but they insisted. I happen to be more PUJ-savvy than them both! Commuting by jeep is easy and practical. It's also a helpful way to navigate yourself if you're lost, and jeepney drivers can be nice people to talk to...except for a few exceptions but the solution to this is to be polite. I do agree that taking a jeep in the rain is huge hassle. All the passengers have umbrellas and when they crouch their way in, their rain-soaked umbrellas drip all over the other passengers. Not all tarps covering the windows can be protective. Nevertheless, jeeps are fun. They define the Philippines and it's one way to be a part of a community ("bayad po, pakisuyo lang po"/"mama sa tabi lang po")

hi zengy, i guess you really hate riding jeeps. well,i can't blame you for that but what can we do,we don't own the jeep also right? just be patient,my friend! most drivers tend to make their jeep full of passengers cause it's their job,it's how they make a living.and i also hate smokers,i don't like smelling the smokes all over specially when the jeep has air freshener that makes passengers dizzy,not a good idea! yes,there were passengers who sit like a queen,just arrogant! what can we do about the wind,dear? we just have to manage our hair so when it drives fast,we won't be able to irritate our seatmates of our flying hair. i really don't like women who just flip their hair as if no one sits beside them and don't care if they just hurt the eyes because of their hair. we are all passengers and sharing each other's smell. it just the effort of someone who would like to smell good and have hygiene purposes. i just hope they can manage that on their own...

of-course my friend. i am crazy about riding a jeep. and i love 4 wheel drive vehicles more. it is more easier to drive a jeep while you are in a long journey than a car.i used to go to hill top where we can enjoy the beauty of the nature. for these kind of journey, jeep is more better and you will hardly be tired while riding a jeep.and also another reason is there. in a jeep you can have more number of friends than in a car and as the number of friends increases the joy will also increase.
