Don't you think as consumers we are becoming superficial?

I am amazed at how people will sleep over night, stand in long lines just to get the latest I-phone. When there is a "BIG" movie we flock and stay for hours to be the first to see it. We pay enormous amounts of money for the best brand even though a generic brand 10 times cheaper does the same thing. It's all a matter of looks and names. Why do you think society is becoming so caught up with having the latest and best all the time?

I understand. Many people are caught up in that frenzy but not I! I am sickened by the fact that people just have to have the newest type of cell phone and lap top

We've become too obsessed with material things to the detriment of our society, it makes people who can't afford the best things feel inferior and those who can think they are better than the rest. I personally think our governments want it this way as they make a lot of money off the taxes on everything we buy and while were all obsessed with getting the latest Ipad or whatever we're not questioning their decisions.

I don't know who is the source of the rat race and frenzy shoppers are spun into but it's obvious that unless people wisen up and say stop this it will go on and on and on I use to think it shocking when a teenager said they had to get a pair of sneakers that cost 150.00 .. that was the gift they wanted Now it's not just the kids that are trying to keep up it's we adults. .We are teaching our kids by what we buy and by our values ..we are setting the pace. Buy buy buy. We have to buy valentine cards, mother's day cards, we have to buy halloween cards etc etc. WE not only decorate the house for christmas.. you see lights up for halloween and you see giant easter bunnies and items out on lawns for easter. People are being sucked into a buy buy way of living. If people stop buying then markets will have to stop pushing..What is the answer?

I tend to agree with. I don't see any point in sleeping on the door steps to get into a shop quicker, surely some must feel silly when the product they want actually fizzles down and becomes just a every day item. I recall seeing a program that showed a massive crowd of brides to be, waiting for a shop to open up that was selling expensive dresses at reduced prices and it hard a lot of trouble. We're getting caught up in a dangerous trend of wanting things exactly when we see it. I really try to wait. (I'm not that good) but I don't do crazy things to an obsessive point. :)

The day after Thanksgiving is the worst day in America to shop and I found that out when I went shopping on "Black Friday" ( the day after Thanksgiving) I had never heard of "Black Friday" but I can tell you I will never forget my first and only experience of it. Bumper to bumper parking..getting through the stores was like getting through a jam packed subway.. People grabbing things right out of the reach of other shoppers and there has been casualties on "Black Friday" Silly I bet lots of the things that are marked as a sale are not even!!

I think the program I watched was about "Black Friday", seems to ring a bell. I can't see any reason for people to fight over something that they haven't brought, this isn't something common in England. Scary to think that people are willing to fight over a purchase because they feel that it will get them a bargain. Only way I can compare it is going shopping a few days before Christmas. Empty shelves and the food you want you have to be quick to get. One reason why I do this way before because it's no fun, does anyone really enjoy these situations. It's been fun talking with you littlefranciscan :) It's nice to have a friend from when I originally here still around.

Some people always want to stay updated with whats new on the market and be the first to get a brand new thing which will make you one step ahead the others just because he has it the others don't.

My philosophy is ."if it does the job for which I need it..it matters not the brand. It doesn't even have to be new."

True ..if the more expensive did satisfy us then we wouldn't have to keep buying more of the same. We just are never satisfied.. The more we have the more we want sometimes.

I agree with you ... but some people think if they spend more money on a product the product's quality is better. I many cases more expensive products don't always satisfy our needs but they are expensive because they look so attractive. People are sometimes so blind that they buy a product by it's wrapping and not by what's inside.

an acquisitive mind, an aquisitive society in which the craving for material things seems never satisfied.

This is very true.. we only desire more of what we have. If we don't take the first bite; we don't seek more ..

Unfortunatly we are a generation of "keeping up with the joneses". I myself is guilty. When I first finished school, I thought it was expected of me to live on my own, drive a four door sedan and go out for lunch and dinner every day. I soon found out that wth my little income the only way to have this lifestyle was to go into debt. now five years later, i have very little to show for all that "display" except for a giant ball of debt. I think we all get caught up in protraying this "image" so much that we don't see the harm it does to us. whether it be financailly (we can't all afford a new iphone), healthly (we can't all sleep in the cold overnight outside) or whatever the issue. I think we all need learn how to be happy with what we have. (myself include)

Even the most careful have a debt they carry with themselves. I think only the very rich have no debt; but they carry plastic credit cards..so I would say even they have their bills to pay. The less we need to buy on credit; the more we will be able to save for the rainy days of life.

i myself wouldn't stand in line for a phone if they gave it to me, but when it comes to clothes i found that if i pay a few dollars more for a good brand as in i buy good shirts they dont shrink, fade or come apart at the seams,as for food generic brand name supermarket food is usually not as good as the name brand, per say dole pineapple in a can is much softer and sweeter than a supermarket brand, i go to wal-mart for my canned goods and another store for my meat products. when it comes to anything else i wont pay extra money just because it has a name brand on it because half the time your paying for the name. ive had the same cell phone for 6 years and it serves me just fine the way it is.

When things are little more sweeter does it make it better? If we never ate the brand names, would we know the cheaper brand is not tasty.. Is it because our palates are so spoiled that we have to have the sweetest tasting. I know when it comes to sugar free things the difference in taste is marked but, I have not always found the taste noticeable between name brands and generics. I think you do get better quality in a higher priced cloth. Yet, you can go to goodwill or salvation army and pick up a "name brand" at a generic price clothing

People have had to become less superficial since the economy has been down. I have noticed a lot more second hand stores than what there used to be. It is amazing to consider what some people can afford to pay for high dollar items.

I agree. Second hand stores often are times have items that are quite good; the only one who will know that clothing or other items come from such stores is you
