How do you get referrals?

This question I guess gets asked alot & I probably have even asked it on here in a different way too...We all have our own ways of getting referrals for our different sites but there are ways that are more effective than others. Which way do you find is effective for you? I have tried traffic sites, advertising on my various sites, telling my friends in person & even letting my facebook friends know. Lately I have found the most effective way is to say something in my status on facebook...other than that, the only effective way for me is to buy referrals... Don't get me wron, I do get the odd referral through people going on my profile here & through traffic exchanges but not much. I have also just started up a blog where I plan to list all the sites I have been paid by as I get paid by them - I just have to make sure I get traffic to my blog... I am eager to hear your effective ways.
