I have noticed that when stores have sales, they sometimes only get a few of the items in. They should stock up but it seems they just use the sales to get customers into the stores. Some stores won't even give you rainchecks on things they should have in stock. It really isn't right. It seems that some stores are worse then others when it comes to sales.

Hi Cerebellum, one thing i noticed with sales and promos too...the expiry dates are about to come. they need to dispose it or else it will be lose on their part. so, we need to be keen enough to check the products especially when it's on sale and promo!

I went to one store because they were having a sale. The expiration date on some merchandise was the next day. I didn't know it at the time, but they were closing for renovations and didn't order anything fresh. That experience has made me check expiration dates all of the time.

Hi Jugs..don't know if you have Walgreens there but they are famous for that..No matter what sale I go there after they either say the truck didn't come in yet or we are out of it..They offer a raincheck but the point is that I am here NOW..sometimes I don't feel like going back so I miss the sale item all together..Its really aggravating..

I have gone to shop on the morning that they have had all the deals start on and they have sold right out when they have not been open all that long, so i think that they only get a few of the things in and that is the way they try to get customers in.

Over here in Aus, that would never happen. They bulk up on "specials" and if the shelves are empty you can be sure there is stock available out the back just not enough staff to stack the shelves quickly enough. The big supermarkets here won't pay staff if they don't have to. If there is an empty shelf...just ask. Last time the manager got one of the hand held shelf scanners they use and it told him that the goods I wanted were in the store but not yet unpacked so he got someone to unpack them for me.

WooHoo! Congratulations...as my ex used to say "Whinge and win" and sometimes that's true. Not only did you not miss out on taking home some meat but you got the fresher/better stuff at the cheaper price. You can be sure that the store will not lose on that either....they will simply mark up an equivalent amount and sting another customer.

I did ask the other day and the manager noticed that i tend to buy alot of shopping from the store and he did come over and asked me how i was so i happened to say that they had hardly no meat left in their fridge and i was after a few joints of meat to put in my freezer, so he went off and marked some up cheaper for me as they had ran out of the other sort that they had on special as i was a good customer.

Yes I notice that all the time, and if store managers were smart whenever they have a sale of real popular items they should make sure they have more than enough. For instance in my local Walgreen's every once in awhile there is a sale of Maxwell House Instant Coffee...within a few hours it's all gone---if you're not there the very first day of the sale you're out of luck until they restock which can take a few days

I think they put things on special that are about to grow old and that they want to get rid of. That is the goal--to get rid of them!

Can't you try to go at a different time so you are there when they have some of the product you want.

Hi jugs, here we have the similar situation. When seeing the empty shelves or shelves with only a few items left on them, I know such stuffs are on sale. For the smart consumers have swept away the stuffs with very much lower price. if I really need the items left I usually would buy them as well. Here the two nearby hypermarkets always offer certain items with lower price during weekends to attract customers. They take turn to pick different items in different weeks to entertain their regular customers. Therefore the market are always crowded with people to grab the worth to buy items with special price during weekends. I couldn't tolerate to wait in the long queue to pay for the stuffs Therefore I would do the purchase only if seeing less people in front of any cashier counter Happy posting!

I think this is one of their commercial tactics to attract consumers. Therefore the amount of stuffs on sale are limited. Due to this customers would rush to the stores or hypermarket after knowing there are items offered with pretty lower price. I seldom come across such opportunity for I'm always the sluggish customer

sounds like the old bait and switch. they have a limited amount of sale items, but more of something they want to get rid of.

Hello jugsjugs. We had a new and big supermarket last year till this May. It was very good with a lot of customers, but in the last few months, I noticed that some counters were empty and even moved away. Last month, it was totally closed. I guess that it was because of its location in the town that made its business go all the way down the slope. It was my favorite supermarket as it is so close to where I live and work. Now I will have to go to other supermarkets for shopping. What a pity it is!

Hi jisir, it's rather shame that the said supermarket couldn't keep on to carry on its business. This has caused inconvenience for you as well as the residents living around. Don't be sad dear, anyway, this provides you a good opportunity to have exercise by cycling a farther distance. I hope you still could get certain essential daily commodities from the nearby stalls or shops available there. Take care.

I think that there are alot of places that are struggling at the moment as there is alot of competition out there for them to compete with.I think that all the super markets are competing with each other all the time, but to say that they have things as a good deal and then run out of them is really bad.

haha =D THat's normal i guess!! IT's not that the food is lousy or be it it's an unknown brand, as long as there's a special sale, everything will be swept off the shelf in no time!! After all, it's cheap, and they can be buying home to try it our.. IF it's not appealing to them after trying, they wont feel the pinch because it's on special and the price is low.. haha

It is very common practice for a store to run a special on something that they only have a couple of. It is a marketing ploy to drag you in in hopes that you will still spend money. I think that it is crap when they do that and even worse is that you usually cannot get a rain check for the item. Business!

I think this is done on purpose just to get us into the store. There must be studies out there that show if they can just get us into the store we will buy something. Usually if you ask the big stores will give you a card to use when they get the product back in so that you can get the same price.

Hi Jugs, It’s frustrating for us consumers and customers to be going to the grocery and to avail of the promo sale items but none is on stock or on display. So, since you are already there, you have no choice but buy whatever is available that is not on sale items. Sometimes, this is one of their strategies to attract customers and gain more sales for the day.

that's always the case. go back the next day and the promo or sale is over...there are lots of stock (sale the previous) on the stand. it's crazy and weird right. my blood pressure is getting high right now as it refreshes my experience with sales and promo hehehehe!

We had big supermarket like Carefur here but when they promote something with low price we usually want to buy it but its always out of stock. I believe its just marketing strategy they limiting the product on sale, so they don't have to lose much but attract many customer to come and end end buying something else which not on sale .

yeah .. Marketing strategy. Departmental stores, one-stop shops especially. For example, in my place , people don't buy tropicana juice in the departmental store when it is on the shelf. When they shift it to the front desk and put up a board. 'DISCOUNT 10%' or 20%, next day the stocks are over. Its very true what u said. when they put things up on special they attracted people.
11 Jun 10
these big stores circulate the area with flyers, for example get the equilivent of a sunday dinner with a small joint, vegs roast potatoes and a dessert like apple pie='for just a tenner'. so you go off down to the store and lo and behold, as you say , the shelves are empty. Same with the cheap loaves of bread, and some of those other special offers. drives you mad and wastes your time. Also wastes your money , because, you are in the store, so while you are in there you may as well buy something

Yes I have noticed. And it usually happens at the same store. K-mart is notorious for this. Sometimes I can get a rain check on an item.

I wish our shops would give us a rain check, they used to but they do not do that anymore which is a shame as the shop that is not doing this has got its self a bit of a bad name for letting their customers down.

Hi, jugsjugs. Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about! Especially when the food that they are selling is marked down at a cheaper price. And if the food is known to be really delicious then many customers will come and take their share. That is how sales are. Especially, when a store is having a grand opening of some kind. People are like cow hoards when they are trying to save some money.

I think that like you say there are always people out there that tend to go for all the discounted deals, but the stores should know to ensure that they have enough for what they need to have the right amount on special and if they were to run out then offer something else simular in the place of it as that way they do not lose much custom as these are the stores that are always doing it and running out of stock.

oh god i hate that,it makes me soo cross, especially if i see it advetised on telly, then go into the shop a couple of days later to find it not there

The problem for the stores is that most of them are part of big chains and the sales were scheduled months ahead of time so they might not have it in stock at the time of the sale. You SHOULD ask for a rain check. If they specify no rain checks on the flyer, then I wouldnt even bother going to the store. Yeah they do this here too. Also, they know that since you're already in the store, you'll buy something else thats not on sale. I dont!
@jugsjugs (12967)

I tend to do my shopping at the same store all the time, but it seems like there aqre two stores that tend to run out of the deals that they have on and neither of the stores offer an alternative item at a discounted price.
