16 year old sailing around the globe???

recently there was this 16 year old american girl who was attempting to be the first teenager to sail around the world by herself on her yatch.personaly i think that this was a very dangerous decision to make.she got stranded somewhere between africa and australia i think and was lucky to be rescued by a ship. My question is, was it wise for her parents to let a girl that young risk her life just to hold a record?
