Does adopting a dog cost money? I want to know because I would like to adopt a dog. I know that I'll have to pay for shots and veterinarian visits, and give it food and stuff. Is adopting a dog from a pet shelter cost money? If it cost something, how much is it?

Yes they do charge to adopt a pet. Here it is $110 for a puppy or kitten. As they get older, the fee reduces. However, that money means you're saving a life PLUS they come with ALL the first round of shots & they've already been neutered or spayed. I had a friend give me a kitten for FREE. However, after the first vet visit, I was out of $150. So, I found it cheaper to get one from the shelter!!! Sometimes free is NOT really free!!! Now with the economy being as tight as it is, you can negotiate with them & sometimes get a reduced fee. When I adopted my 2 kittens 2 years ago, they let me take BOTH for $10 more than it would have normally cost for one!!! I just told the girl from the get go that I would love to have 2 of the kittens there, but only had enough money for one. My 2 for 1 deal meant they had a sure thing & one less mouth to feed!!!

You really need to call your local shelter & ask them your questions. My shelter dogs seem to know I've rescued them & they are VERY grateful & they are VERY LOYAL pets!!!

Most shelters and Humane Society outlets charge a fee for adopting on a dog. It's usually around $50-$100, depending on the age, size and health of the dog. If you would like a dog, I think adoption is the way to go! Doing so saves lives. ^-^

I really love to save animals cause I am a animal lover. I just don't have that kind of money for a dog. I would just try to get a puppy, and save that from abuse on the streets.

Yeah. I think I'll go with asking a friend. I know a friend who's dog is healthy and is also pregnant. I wonder what the mutt looks like.

Different shelters charge different fees and have different requirements to adopt a pet. I fully support adoption from shelters as they provide the communities with a valuable service. I currently live in a town that has no shelter and no animal control at all and it is overrun with feral cats. The best shelter I ever saw was in my home town. They charged something like $90 to adopt but then they automatically spayed/neutered the animals before putting them up for adoption. They also required you supply them with your landlord's number so they could check and make sure it was alright with your landlord before allowing you to adopt. Also they required references...people who could vouch for your responsibility in caring for your pets. They basically set up the model I would like all shelters to adopt. Oh...I forgot...they also put microchips in the animals to help in case the animal got lost, they could have your phone number to let you know when the animal was turned in. I was very grateful for this because the cat we adopted from them got lost twice over the course of his life. We were so glad to get him back, too! I fully support shelters and when I can, I adopt from them. Here I do the next best thing: I take in the stray cats and get them spayed/neutered. I'm also operating a catch/spay/release program that will go into full swing once I get the funding. If you'd like to know more about my work, you can visit my blog: http://thecatladyrules.blogspot.com/ The best animals I've ever had I adopted from a shelter so by all means, adopt from a shelter! Go for it! And let us know how it goes. :) hugs!
