By reading I don't mean memorizing D - O - G reads as dog, but reading a new word he haven't heard before like BLOGGING.

The younger, the better. :) I started speaking simple words when I was 1. I could finally read books when I was 4! I think younger kids learn better, because they are so enthusiastic about new stuff.

wow, how old are you now? how'd you know you started speaking at 1? You can't possibly remember it. And how'd you know you were reading by 4?

My kids all started school at 5 and the three girls could all read fairly well by then. MY son could not but he is dyslexic. However even he was reading by the time he was 11 or 12.
