In india the new currency coins are more attractive, but they have lost the weight and size. Its almost same as the 50paise coins. its becoming more confusing to elders. there are new coloured coin with golden colour but the paint is going after few days. why the reserve bank are not making quality coins.

Hi ram, You said it very correctly; it is just like a 50 paise coin. Now I am familiar with the coin so there is no doubt when getting the coin in my hand. Earlier I used to check the coin many times to ensure that it is a five rupee coin. The new two rupee coin is also confusing one. I have to check the writing in it otherwise I may think that it is a one rupees coin. I agree the size is little larger but on a quick look it is confusing.

The cost of manufacturing a coin is higher than its face value i.e a coin of one(1) rupee costs around 1.20 rupee to manufacture so too cut cost this is being done. Also there is some information which says the coins are smuggled to Bangladesh were they are melted and used for other purpose as the cost of mineral-ore used is higher, this is the prime reason for shortage of coins even after Reserve Bank minting lot of coins. Hence this is being done, better option would be to print notes for even these i guess.

Yes, many times i often give a 5 rupee coin instead of a 50 paise coin, the golden one is unique and very nice but the ash color is really confusing to me too
