Hello my lotters! I adopted a 6 wk. old pit bull, from the aminal rescue 2 wks ago. She is a sweet , loving, well manored pup.. However being a pit, and having reputation of pit bull w/the aggressiveness, I'm reluctant on how to go about potty training. I don't want to damage her spirit or make her in any way act aggresive. What are some of the more effective way for house training a pup? And has anyone heard of putting tape on the front claws of a dogs pet for a potty training method of dogs? .

Putting tape on their paws?? No, never heard of that... I wouldn't recommend doing that if you ever want to clip her nails without her being afraid of having her feet touched! For house training a dog the BEST tool to use is a crate and baby gates! I would go find a crate that gives her enough room to stand and turn around. Dogs naturally hate going to the bathroom where they sleep. Don't get one that's too big! If it's too large she will have room to "go" in there and not sleep in it... so it won't work. There are crates on the market that have dividers that allow you to expand the size of the crate as the puppy grows. Don't keep her in the crate all the time. A puppy that age needs to go to the bathroom at least every 4 hours. When it's time for her to go out let her out of the crate and CARRY her outside and put her on the grass. When she "goes" praise her like she just won the nobel prize! She WILL cry when she's locked in the crate. DON'T let her out until she stops! If you let her out while she's crying she learns that crying works and she'll cry MORE! As for the baby gates, these are to keep the puppy in the same room as you are so you can keep an eye on her and catch her "in the act". If you find a puddle you can't say anything... but if you catch her peeing you can tell her NO! and bring her right outside. There's no point in "rubbing her nose in it" because then she figures out that you don't like pee... You have to have her learn that you don't like her PEEING, so you have to catch her doing it. Just like the crate, with the baby gates you still have to let her out often! If she has access to water all day she will have to pee all day. Pick up her water bowl in the afternoon so she will be "empty" by bed time. My favorite dog training books are by The Monks of New Skete (The Art of Raising a Puppy is FABULOUS) Aggression wise, Pitties are often aggressive to other dogs. So be sure to socialize her a lot with nice, calm, non-agressive dogs so she learns to love other dogs (make sure she has all her shots before you take her around strange dogs so she doesn't catch something). Pitties, like all bully breeds, can be VERY headstrong and bossy, so make sure that you are consistent with your training and that she knows you are the "pack leader". There is NEVER a reason to hit a dog... even when they are very annoying... it just makes them not trust you and can make them fear aggressive. I could go on forever... Just remember PATIENCE and CONSISTENCY! Hooray for adopting!!! Good luck! P.S. Check them out (their books were my dog training text books in college) http://www.newsketemonks.com/training.htm
