Stop the pigeons boxing!

We get a lot of wood pigeons in our garden and I think they live in the trees that surround us. We get some boxing of the pigeons at this time of year (fighting), but this morning I saw a very bad fight, one pigeon had actually climbed on top of another and was clawing and pecking at it very badly, there was a lot of loud clapping of the wings going on, I tried to distrac it but it didn't work and as they were so high up in the tree, I couldn't really do anything else about it, after about 5 minutes, as I had to get back to work, I had to just walk away leaving them there like that. Would could I have done to help the poor pigeon, I just keep wondering whether it got away...?

You are having a good intention to save the pigeon and you tried to distract it but it didn't work, you tried your best you cannot do anything else more than that because it was on the top and it is hard for you to reach there, or you might have brought a long stick and tried to touch the pigeon with the stick then it may fly away.

No, it wasn't really possible to get a stick and get at it, the tree is not actually in our garden, rather I was watching from my garden actually, I think the neighbours were probably wondering what I was up to staring pointless at the tree...I did actually see someone walk past, don't know what they made of it, but still I feel a bit guilty...maybe I should have stayed longer and tried to do something about it...
