What Habits Have You Had Since Childhood?

Ever since I was a child, I have always had to brush my teeth every night before I go to bed. Now I just do it automatically. Although I don't have as many healthy habits as I should, I never neglect brushing my teeth before bed, and I don't feel right if I don't. I also buckle my seatbelt every single time I drive. I have done this all my life. I don't even think about it because it is so automatic. Its amazing how some habits can be so ingrained and others have to be done consciously every day. For me, making my bed is not automatic, so I have to make myself do that, although I know this is automatic for some people. What habits have been so ingrained in you since you were young that they are automatic?

Brushing your teeth after every meal is an excellent habit! Everyone should have this great habit to keep their teeth healthy! Good job!

Reading fairly often is a habit that I have had as long as I can remember. I love to read and it is something that has been done since a young age. I really cannot remember a time where I did not read at least something during the day. Granted, given the time that exists, it might be a few pages, maybe a chapter or two in a book but at least it is something. Also, going for regular walks is something that I really have enjoyed when I was a child. It keeps me as healthy as can be expected. Granted, I'm not the most healthy person in the world. However, I think I would be a lot worse off if it was not for my regular walks. So it is really something that I have done. There are other habits that got started early, but that is just something that sticks out in my mind at the moment.

Wow, you have some really good habits. Walking is certainly a very good, healthy habit to have. I need to make that a habit myself. I recently started reading, too, since I usually hardly read at all. Hopefully I can make that a habit, too. Keep up your good habits!

Yes, that's right - repeatedly doing a task for an extended period can lead to new nerve patterns in the brain, which thereon enable you to do it automatically. Then there's also been the talk of the power of 21 i.e if you perform an activity for 21 successive days, it will turn into a habit. I can't vouch for it 100%, but it does sound convincing and I've even tried it as a motivator to cultivate a new habit which is still with me. As to your question, geez..I think I'm of some rare breed that I do nothing automatically - except waking up, which I do w/o an alarm - and need at least a minimal push to virtually everything.

I must be of the same breed... I hardly do anything automatically! I don't wake up automatically.... You're amazing, waking up without an alarm! I wish I could do that! :) I do think the 21-day habit thing works somewhat, but I still have to make myself do it after 21 days. After 21 days, the main push I have is to keep going so I don't break the habit!

No matter how old we get, some habits are just too hard to break. I find myself still biting my nails when i get too anxious or nervous about something. I also tend to twist my hair while I am reading. We can tell ourselves that we have broken a habit and we think that we have. Then we find ourselves doing it again.

Yeah, sometimes we think we have gotten rid of a habit and we find ourselves doing it again... especially habits that are mindless, like biting nails or twisting hair. We don't even realize we're doing it!

That's interesting. I know milk is helpful for falling asleep. So you probably don't have any trouble falling asleep with a habit like that.

Habits I had since I was a child? Well knocking my knees together when sitting down...been doing that ever since. I can't explain why I do it I just do. Another would fixing my glasses since I've had them since I was a kid. The weird thing is I keep on fixing them even if they aren't falling from my face.

I have a habit to go to bathroom to complete morning routine. I can not hold the big one more than 30 minutes. It is still the problem. From the childhood I am praying to God at bed time as I can do best on next day. I also thanked him for the day I have passed. I always do it either I have passed the day wit joy or sorrow. Another one I always wear helmet when I drive my two Wheller. I also do it for my daughter. There are some more but not now.

Praying before bed is an excellent habit! It's also great that you have a habit of wearing your helmet. Not everyone does, but it's an excellent habit to have!

Picking my nose... Just kidding! I buckle my seat belt automatically too. I make sure anyone riding with me buckles to or the car doesn't even start rolling. Thats not even a question in my family. Seatbelt is a must. Hmm other habits from childhood...ah. I put chips on my sandwich and smoosh them then eat it like that. I know it is weird but me and my brother and sister all do it. You make a sandwich, put your chips on it, then smoosh it. I actually had to think pretty hard before really answering because habits are things you don't realize you are doing and I know mine is weird from what most people do but I don't really think about it. I always look in the toilet when I pick up the lid. I mean, I don't stare into it or anything but when I was little I watched this movie where this hand got flushed down the toilet but then crawled back up again and grabbed someone when they were on the toilet so I always checked. I still do. Not necessarily for a hand or anything but I just look in then go to the bathroom.

I used to do the same thing with pretzels in my sandwiches. I think I even did it with chips, too. Now I'm going to have to try it again! You're making me hungry! Your toilet habit had me in hysterics!! That is precisely why I don't watch scary movies! LOL I did see a Hidden Camera video on YouTube where they had a head pop out of the toilet when someone opened it! That was really funny. And I'm glad you don't really expect to see a hand come out of the toilet! :)

What a great habit! I personally don't have this one, but I wish I did. I have to make myself exercise, and I don't do it nearly as often as I should. I wish it was ingrained in me since childhood! :)

the habit i have is inclined with sleeping. that is, since i was a kid, i cant sleep with out a mosquito net on my feet. i just cant sleep without it and my feet scrubbing in it. until now i am still doing it. lol i just cant sleep well at night without it. That is why i am avoiding sleeping over my friend's house. im just afraid they dont have mosquito net there for my feet to scrub on. and its such a shame to bring one when i will sleep over with them haha

That's interesting. I think many people have to sleep with a blanket over them. Ever since I was a kid, I always slept under a blanket, even if it was very hot But I have never slept under a mosquito net...

i think the only habit that i have carried from my childhood is writing poems. Apart from that i have been a changed person. i have moulded mysef to the current world. I have changed myself completely. I was a shy and a silent guy. But now i i have completely changed.

It's commendable that you changed yourself. It's not always easy, but there is so much to be gained from growing out of our childhood habits. Great job!
