Many hospitals in my country are accepting voluntary nurses who wants to have experience of the hospital setting. Many have three months duration of stay in the department they chose for learning. the hospitals also earned from them because the hospitals accept them for a fee. These nurses are given tasks but, they are supervised by the regular nurses on duty because the volunteers are not liable for any mistake in their deed.

well, what would be the cost of the fee? will be go higher than the regular college fees? ... and, WHAT would be the conditions to work as a volunteer? .. will they allow even non-qualified persons? ... just asking. it is surprising to learn about the way, hospitals put the lives of patients in danger .. though you said, there are supervisors. BUT, what would a supervisor do, when there are non-qualified assistants?

It was said that the volunteers pay at least two thousand pesos. It is small fee but, it is still money. I can't tell if hospitals screen the volunteers they accept with regards to their standing. As far as i know, they are not really allowed to handle patients on their own.

well, that is one solace that the volunteers are not allowed to be independent with the patients. I feel that even then, it is burning the candle at both ends. The nurses also pay, and the patients also pay! .. HOSPITALS are making money! .. but, soon...this will back-fire. LET us hope everything turns out to be well! for everyone.

I am not sure about from what country are you from. But, I guess we really have the same opinion and situation. I am from Philippines and we do have a lot of nurses here, including me, who cannot find an easy nursing job in the hospital simply because there are only very few hospitals and many nurses. They cannot accommodate us all. Because of that, some nurses chose to volunteer working in the hospitals even without pay just to get some experiences. It's totally hard for me because personally, I have not yet practiced my profession yet because of the reason that I want to earn an income for myself and for my family. As much as I would like to gain nursing experiences from hospitals near my area, I couldn't due to some financial needs.

You know what, actually the hospital won't admit that they are shortage of nurses. If you don't know, in my hospital we are hiring nurses every 3 to 4 months... about 100 staff nurses.. Some hospital bombarded their nurses with lots of patient because the don't want to pay but instead they hire volunteer because they can earn... that the hurtful reality here in the Philippines. If I where you, If you have enough money, try to continue schooling in other country for NUrsing, once your done , You can find a decent and high paying jobs abroad....=)

I thisnk this is one of the reasons why there are meny nurse graduates who work in different fields far from what they studied for. Most people after graduating expect to earn a living but since hospitals usually don't accept newly grads then they have to volunteer and keep on paying even though they have already served lots of hours in the hospital while they wer studying. I gues they are just saying that their education is not enough and they need to learn more. I have some many nurse friends and according to them you need to have at least 6 moths of volunteer experience before you get a decent salary as a nurse.

volunteer nurses at work - The volunteers in the hospital.
It is sad and news has been out that a lot of nursing graduates in the Philippines are out of job. I hope that they could find a decent job related to their field or else, go to business

yes...that is indeed true...and very much unfair for me... considering that some hospitals takes advantage of the need of nurses for experience in order to apply nursing jobs abroad...Some of these hospitals would even require you to pay them in exchange for a 3 month training/volunteer in their institution...

Sad to say that , others abused the crowed nurses here in my country.. they hire volunteer nurses with no pay. It is sometimes burden on the part to the regular staff nurses , because volunteer wont be sued to malpractice and negligence since it will be carry on to the senior nurses... Other hospital are taking advantage of the manpower... Just for the sake of experience , i don't see they are learning, because their scope of practice and even RESPONSIBILTIES is limited. There is no room for mistakes in the HOSPITALS, we are dealing with LIFE.
