The importance of Sacrificial Lambs in the Bible?

I had this dream about a young man laying a lamb on a tree stump like an offering. I heard a calm man's voice say "A lamb for a lamb". I thought immediately of Cain and Abel and Abel's offering. But I dunno if it has anything to do with that. So what is the importance of the ANIMAL lamb in the bible? Someone told me that it may be some kind of biblical dream, so I'm just checking here first before I completely ignore this dream.
