After you fill out a form to become an affiliate, they usually give you a code that specifically tells them that someone bought from their store through links that you put up somewhere. The website will give you a percentage from the sale because someone bought from their site using the link you provided. I know it works because I'm affiliated with a website that sells anime and I've earned money from them because someone bought anime through the links I provided through my website.

content is key when one of my blogs is still operational i try to find the cheapest one among my affiliations. like for an example i review an item and there are 3 companies that are selling with different prices i will basically put the 3 link/companies but will highlight the cheapest one. i think it is best to have a great content with affiliation. and with videos is great too.
