A big pronunciation difference between American English and British English

We have learned British English in China for several years. Today I know that in India, they also learn British English.
But now I'm in USA, so I have to change the British English to American English. Writing is easy to change, but pronuciation is hard. In British English, the vowels in "Car" and "Sorry" are different, but in American English, they are both pronounced as "a".
Any good suggestions for the change from British to American English?

I would say it has to do with local accents - both the USA and UK have pronunciations that to a foreigner must sound very strange.
A little example - in North-East England, the word "name", if someone has a broad accent, would be pronounced as though it was spelled "niem" or "nyem".
