The United Farm Workers Union has announced a new campaign titled, "Take Our Jobs." convinced Americans do not want the low paying, physically challenging jobs that are currently done by many illegal immigrants. The union president stated, "Farm workers do the work that most Americans are not willing to do." I take exception to that statement, as if there are no Americans willing to do a hard job. The job itself isn't what keeps Americans from doing them, it's the pay. Most people can't survive on what farm workers are paid. Most of these jobs pay minimum wage, and there are some states that aren't required to even pay that much. I also find it interesting that a Union is focusing on Americans not wanting the jobs, and not the pay and benefits that make it unrealistic for most Americans to survive working these jobs. According to the department of agriculture, of the almost million farm workers, about 70% are illegals. Isn't that the real problem, the expectation that people should do a job that won't even pay them enough to live and support their family? As long as there are illegals willing to work at below minimum wage, there will always be people willing to employ them.
