How to ship artworks?

I'm wandering how to ship different kinds of artworks as drawings on paper?
If my painting is small then I could ship it in envelope but in that case is it safely - does postmen will not crumple it or make any other damage.
And what about large size artworks which will no fit in envelope - as big oil paintings on cartons or canvas?
What could you suggest? How do you ship such stuff?

My art teacher suggested to us that we either sandwich it between two pieces of cardboard or roll it up and insert it in a tube. If it is a stretched canvas wrapping it in towels or something. But then again oil paint can take years to dry so that might smudge the paint.
