With the French ban on the bhurka is Britain likely to follow?

Bhurka - Should the bhurka be banned in the UK?

I'm sure that you've all heard that France is to fine all women who wear the bhurka £700 and there is now a call for the same ban to be brought in in the UK. It is already in force in Italy when a woman was fined 500 euros (£430)for wearing one in a bank. Now I realise that this will be a highly contentious matter and it will be classed as going against peoples civil liberties. I myself always thought that wearing the bhurka was a religious thing but apparently ( correct me if this is wrong but research seems to confirm it) that according to Islamic law it is not necessary to cover the face with a veil. It seems that the dress code for Muslim women is Hijaab - which mean that the body should be covered in a way that it does not reveal the figure, but the woman's face can be visible. The reason I would agree with banning the bhurka is completely based on security - in Britain today you are not permitted to enter shops, banks etc wearing motorcycle helmets or 'hoodies' as they may cover the face - in which case the bhurka should come the same catagory, also it could be ANYBODY hiding underneath that bhurka. I don't class this as me being intolerant to other cultures , but if there are laws regarding our faces being visable in this country - surely that should cover everybody

I personally do not care if I "offend" people with what I am about to say, but I think it should be 100% banned in our country. The head scarf which covers the hair is what is in the Islamic "law", and so be it, that is fair enough. To Muslims, their hair is sacred and something only for the husband to see etc. This is fine with me, do as you please. I won't look at you funnily for wearing it, I won't call you names in the street for wearing it. But I am sorry, those letterbox things are horrible, disgusting and sorry but they scare the hell out of me. Reasons: 1) I cannot see who is beneath the veil. It could be a man, a woman a child, a murderer, someone who is Britains most wanted. And I wouldnt have a clue. Your eyes really do not tell you much about a person! 2) If my husband was to walk into a shop with a motorbike helmet on, he would be told to remove it. If my brother was to walk into a shop with his hood up due to the rain outside he'd be told to take it down. My sister was in a pub and had a top on which had a hood on it, she didnt have the hood up, it was just there, she was told she would have to tuck the hood in or she wouldhave to leave...! BUT if a muslim walked into a pub/shop/bank they would not be told to remove the veil despite it covering all identity from the cameras. 3) Why should a woman cover herself from head to toe because a man says she should? We live in England, not Pakistan. 4) This is the UK. If you want to come and live in our country, use our NHS service, work in our workplaces, recieve our benefits/pensions, then live by our laws and rules and i am sorry, but if you dont like that, then as far as I am concerned, get the hell out. If I was to go to a country such as Pakistan where the law/rules were I could not reveal my skin and had to cover up, I would do. I'd respect the countries traditions and rules. I amn there as a visitor, yes I may not like been hot in complete covered up clothes, but i have a choice between going there and not. And so I will live how they expect me to. The same applies to this country. 5) Terrorism: Ok I am not the sort of person who thinks that every single Muslim is goign to bomb us, I am not that small minded, but what better guise for a terrorist, be it an IRA bomber or an Islamic Extremist, than a full outfit which covers the WHOLE body, from head to toe, including the face, eyes and mouth (many have a mesh over the eyes even!), even if they were a well known terrorist, you wouldnt know! 6) EVEN MUSLIM COUNTRIED ARE BANNING THEM! I read yesterday a Muslim country has banned the burka, but our country is too flipping PC that they're worried of offending anybody, what they dont realise is MANY people dont give two hoots whether its banned or not, and will happily do as they are asked by the government, happy to be here and will live how they are asked. So yes I say Ban the Burkha. I would sign a petition for that 10 times over.

hello there, how about those millionairee visitors from here who spend millions of euros in paris, will that rule also be applied? shall they be arrested and pay for breaking the rule?

Yes of course, it has absolutely nothing to do with money!!!! Its about security and rights for women, nothing to do with how much a person spends!!!! Would you want someone coming into your place of work with their face covered with say a "Scream" Mask? Something to cover their Identity??? Sorry you have a small minded way of thinking. Think of the millions who have been killed in all the terrorist attacks on the world, and then think about your silly comment about Arabs who spend "millions of euros" in Paris. Stick to the rules of the country your going to, as Stine says, just like we would if we came to your country.

Yes, I agree... Burkha should be treated the same as Helmets... The govt should make it clear that they are not against the religious practice, but that it is simply a part of security measures followed... I hope everyone will understand and respect the law... :)

It is a difficult subject to broach as you feel that you are being racist or against their religion but I think it is completely different.

I agree it is entirely different than what some people think it is... Worse, the fanatics use this as a part of their tactics to divert the public sympathy to certain people... This should not happen.. Or let me put it this way, we should not let the religious fanatics make something out of it...

I think it is a good idea to ban the bhurka, as it is a bit of a concern when you think of security in places like banks etc.The way terrorism is at the moment any one could put on a bhurka and do any thing they want, so if you can not wear helmets or hoodies you should not be allowed to wear a bhurka when entering banks

I remember reading stories in the past where David Beckham and Michael Jackson wore them so they could get about unseen - just shows how anybody could be disguised in them
