How do you know a person is vain?

How do you really tell if a person is vain or if they just take pride in their appearance? Whenever I go to the shops I see women, not so much men but women mostly that are dressed up like they are going to a cocktail party when in reality they are only going to the supermarket. Who does that for a start but mostly they will look at the people around them like we are all scum no matter what we are wearing. Do you think this means they are so vain that no one else could be as beautiful as them or are they so far up themselves that they can't conceive of anyone else thinking they look silly dressed up like that in a supermarket. Do they look down their nose at you? How do you talk to people like that? Do you talk to people like that?

How do you gauge vanity in a person? It might be that they really want to look good in the eye of whomever they are talking to or meeting. However, if you always look in your mirror every now and then checking your appearance or lipstick or powdering your nose every so often I think thats "vanity to the max"...

I dont like to talk to that kind of people. They are always worried about how they look and love looking at themselves in the mirror. They are the people who think that everyone love/like them or wants to be them. They basically think everything in life is about them. A lit of the young celebrities would be good examples.

Well, I think people just like to look nice for themselves, as some people do care how others see them, and so if they dress up well, feel good about themselves, knowing that others will see them in the same way they do, then it's a good confidence builder. I know that sometimes I like to make the effort to look better, so that I feel more confident when people look at me and that I think that they would see a 'better' me and in turn makes me feel more confident. I think i would probably class myself as being a bit vain as I look in the mirror too many times, but only because I get paranoid about how 'ugly' I can look. On the otherhand, I never look down at people who are less well dressed than me because I sometimes dress the same way as a frump. :)

Hmm... if a person takes too much pride in his or her appearance, I think that's already vanity.:D But, I don't see anything wrong with it. If being vain makes a person happy, then I don't have the right to go against him or her.:D
