Those Big Brown Eyes

As some of you know, I have an Irish Setter and a bichon. Lambchop, the bichon is very good about not begging for food while we eat but Tab, the Setter, has a bit of a problem. She knows it is a no no to beg so what she does it lies down as close to us as possible without getting yelled at, and stares, no begging, just staring! She has the most beautiful huge brown eyes and you can feel them while you eat. If you look at her, while she is staring, she quickly looks away and pretends she is looking out the window. You can never catch her. But the second you go back to eating, again the big brown eyes are on you. No matter how fast you try to be to get her eyes to meet yours during the meal, its impossible, she looks out the window! Its kind of become a game with us that live in the house but she always wins. She does it because she knows that staring is not acceptable just like begging isn't but she does it anyway because she is faster than you to look away when you try to catch her. It's really funny. She knows she is going to get something after we finish but the anticipation is just too much for her! Lambchop will lie down and wait cause he knows he'll get somethig but Tab has to make sure that when you have taken your last bite, its her turn. Does your dog watch you eat? Do they beg?

Very rare that Gissi does anything like that lol When he does he will sit nice and turn on the Puppy eyes or he will lie on the Floor pretending to sleep and now and again look at me lol As for Ging, well he is being taught, no begging he will come right up to me and I tell him no, he will look at me all sad, I still tell him no he will then lie down or he will go and get his monkey and sit there with him in his Mouth lol How is little Lambchop???

Hi Sulsi Of course you are not doing wrong who suggested to have him put down?? There is no reason to have him put down What are they saying is wrong with him and why can they not operate and let you pay it in instalments Also this sounds a lot of Money just to have the Anal Glance removed and also for it to take 2 hours it is all very strange Have you still got him on the fresh Meat? Your Vet is not very compassionate at all, try another Vet Sweetie and see what happens because it sounds a lot to me for an Operation Please keep me updated Big Hugs to you all

Hi Gabs..I read Gissi's post just a few minutes ago from this morning and he has had a time of it has he not? Its got to be a hard adjustment to all of a sudden have to share you and other things with someone else. My two, even though they have been together for years and years, still get jealous of each other. You have to pat them equally, cuddle them equally, brush them equally...it never ends. Mine compete for my attention every single day and I imagine thats what you have to look forward to too! This monkey thing is so cute and so funny. Mine love stuffed animals and both have ther designated "babies" as we call them here. They bring them to me whenever they are excited or want something or when come home. Lambchop has Minnie Mouse doll that he takes to bed with him every night and if he forgets it, he will jump off the bed and go get it. Her dress is all yucked up and she only has one ear left but he loves her. He, by the way, is doing fair at best. He has good days and bad days. Unfortunately, I have to keep him on the pain medicine or he has a bad day. When he is on the medicine he acts normal and like himself but without it its a different story. I don't know what to do about it. I can't keep him on it forever but I can not afford 2 thousand dollars for the needed surgery either. It is such a problem Gaby. I just can't have him put to sleep. I cant do it. Especially when he acts fine after he gets his dose in the morning. Am I wrong for doing this? I don't know what the answer is. I am still waiting on word from a loan I applied for but I'm not real optimistic about getting it. So until I know for sure, I just keep giving him the medicine and know that if I do not get it, some kind of decision has to be made. Its day by day.

Our two labs will sit as close to the table as they can get away with looking and begging as well. We tell them bed and to go lay down and they will for a minute or so but it seems as soon as we get to talking they creep back over near us. They get very little table scraps though and depending on what we are eating for the night they might get a trear or two of what we are eating. Now when my 1 year old grandson is eating they are all over him waiting for him to drop something or him to feed them of course!

Hi triera..Oh wow, a baby!!! Now I think that that would be like a gift from God to my dogs. Its like a "sure thing" and hey, if it drops on the floor, its fair game right? Your labs don't know how lucky they are when he comes to visit!! Thanks for the post J

Hahaha, I don't mind the staring as long as they don't try to take my food..If one bothers you, try having 2..Penny and Ciara both sit and stare at me, and since they are still pups, I got to watch them that they don't take the food away, especially form my son since he is lower to the ground..If it really bothers you, can you put her in another room while you eat?

Hi Carm..I do have two. Lambchop my Bichon, is very good and lies down, within steps of the table but does not beg or stare. It's my Irish Setter that does the very coy staring. I would never remove them to another room because its so entertaining watching Tabby and trying to catch her eyes on you that it has become like a game for me. You just can't catch her. She shifts those eyes so fast out the window as if to say "I'm just sitting here, looking out the window, not at you at all" It doesn'n bother me, if fact nothing about these dogs bothers me. They are my saving grace everyday and thats a for sure!

Hi sulsisels~ You sounded like you were describing my cat Luna! He did almost that same thing tonight except he is not quiet! Me and my bf were eating dinner and Luna was lying on the floor next to me rolling on the floor (which I think he thinks is entertainment)and yelling so I know he is begging too! He knows what he's doing, but doesn't care. Dogs listen, cats like Luna don't! His brother Star is not a beggar! Luna is definitely more doglike, but a bad do that doesn't listen! He even growls at my bf and they've been living together for almost 3 years now!

Hi Opal, I didn't know that cats could beg like dogs do. I have never had a cat, so maybe that's why. But I didn't hear any cat owner complains about such a behavior either. Funny thing to know, thanks!

Hi inu! Welcome to myLot! Luna is not a "normal" cat! I've had other cats that would also "beg", but Luna is the only cat that I have ever heard growl! He also can say "mama" and he says it with both syllables very clearly and the few of my friends lucky enough to hear him say it can't believe it! My cat Cougar (RIP) said "ma" so I figured I would try to teach Luna and he freaked me out when he repeated "mama" over and over while following me!

Hi Opal..That is so cool..A growling cat that says Mama..What more could one want!! I had a cat that I so loved for a long time. I still miss her. She didn't exactly beg but would walk constantly around and around and in and out of the bottom of my chair for the entire meal. She would meow at the same time. She had the biggest longest tail that would stand straight up and as she was doing her little "march" the tail would bang against my legs and get between my legs if you can vizualize that. She loved people food, especially spaghetti. There was not much she would not eat. Pizza, of course meat and fish, bananas, any fruit really and her favorite was pistachio nuts. She was such a great cat. I can't have a cat now due to the dogs who both think cats were put on this earth strictly for their chasing up trees amusement. They just can't resist chasing a cat no matter how much trouble they know they are goingc to be in!! Thanks for the post..J

Of course my dog watches me eating, so is my neighbor's dog and so do the dogs that walk by me on the street. I think all the dogs are somehow attracted to our food more than they are attracted to their food. I think it's because they see the joy in our eyes when we eat or they smell the taste of the food or something.

H ilann..(nice name by the way, its different and interesting) Anyway, when I open up the dog food, I look at it and say, no wonder they want what we eat. It looks so unappealing and the smell does nothing for me so I think they come by it very honestly. Thanks for your post J

Be welcome, andrew88. I didn't understand what you mean, probably it's because of the lack of commas. Did anybody understand andrew's post?

Oh goodness, your pup sounds hilarious! Quite the sneakster! I have a black lab who is a guide dog in training so he's grown up with in a very structured way and has never been allowed to eat table scraps. Now that he's 14 months, he's doesn't expect to get anything from the table. He does come by to get a few good whiffs while I'm preparing food, but he gets over it pretty quickly. He's even BETTER in restaurants, completely ignores ALL the food that is on our table and that walks by. I can't imagine how hard it is from him being in a building rich with food smells.

Hi glistar...Wow, that is really cool. Do you train these dogs. What a great job. I love to watch service dogs. They are so smart and so well behaved, it always amazes me. I can't imagine either what goes through their minds while in a restaurant. I mean, working or not, they are only human, well you know what I mean and the smells must drive them crazy! I would love to have a job like that, training dogs for service but it probably would never work out for me because I'd get too attached and when it was time for them to go, I'd be heartbroken. I gues you have to have a certain make up for that and thank God people do. Dogs are remarkable help to he handicapped and what wonderful friends. I admire you.

I think they all do! The only dog I ever met who didnt do it was "Chiquinha", my cousin's female dog. But Chiquinha was extraordinary! What a good soul, I mean it! She was out of this world!

We had broke out two dogs of begging pretty much and then we had a baby. Well she has grown into a toddler and it is like open season in out house. Only one of the dogs will get under the table which used to be fine because he would just sleep while we ate, he likes being close to someone when inside. But now since he know that she drops food some times on purpose! So now the new rule is they have to be in the living room while we eat and it is funny they test the limit and that is the edge of the carpet, they try a toe at a time it is too funny to watch. After we are done it is our smaller dogs job to clean up under the table he is a beagle/jack russle, but our lab mix is such a strange dog that he won't get under the table so he gets whatever is not under the table. I run a daycare during the day so the dogs are outside and I am sure that they can just hear the food dropping to the floor, most of that I sweep up as they don't need that much people food!

Hi Shambro. I hope you do too. They bring so much love to your life you won't even believe it and they are such good company that occasionally will give you a few good laughs. I can't imagine my life without my dogs and I hope I never have to. When the day comes that they are no longer here, there will be another one. I rescued both of these guys and am real big on adoption. There are so many dogs that need a good home and I hope that when you do get one you will go to your near by shelter. It will be the best day of your life!! Thanks for your post.J
