I heard that Jesus was black, and I'm confused because Jesus is always portrayed as a Caucasian hippie in the images and sculptures.

does it matter ? would it change your ability to believe in him ? We forget that in todays mixture of races and the effects it has had over the centuries, what we are meant to look like.. as a english or irish or french or spanish or what ever and to me that it a good thing., as we are humans and should be all treated with the respect as humans. It would stand to reason that Jesus was not eauropean white, he was a Jewish person. Who by comparrison to me being european white, would look darker than me, maybe have darker eyes and hair, what does it matter.? the early paintings commissioned by western churches, and a lot of folks did not have that much experience of meetin people from other lands and cultures, would depict christ in their paintings as they saw the majority of people around them.. You know my son when he was 6 years old asked me what colour God was, rather than answer i asked him what colour he would like him to be., he said blue..we ended up with a God who was coloured like a rainbow, as that was the colour of all the inhabitants of the earth... think about it... his creation is all colours. best wishes x

I'm 19 years old. This is a real statement out of my curiosity. I don't read the bible just to find this thing out because many of you here do read the bible so I supposed you guys knew the answer to my curious mind. I hope I didn't make you evil enough to be angry or anything like that. If you don't know maybe you can read the bible for me. Thank you.

We are not to know what Jesus looks like, but since he was born of the virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit and when he lived on earth, people said "is this not the son of the carpenter," who was of the tribe of Judah, Jesus looked like a normal Jew of that time before the Jews went to Europe and intermarried with the local European population. The reason some think Jesus is black, is because America's history from the time when the Negroes were brought over to America as slave labor, there was this idea that anyone with even an inch of Negro in him was considered Negro, now called black. And since many part blacks look the same as people from the Middle East, that with brown skin and brown eyes, these people who believe such stuff think that anyone with brown skin is black or of Negro descend. As for the idea that Jesus was white, that came because many of the Jews at that time when the paintings of the Old Masters were done showing his image were no longer pure Middle Eastern, but had some European in them, so they would have reddish rather than black hair. So in both eras, mistakes were made in judging Jesus's appearance. But Jesus looked like anyone from the Middle East who lived before they immigrated all over the Roman Empire and married into other ethnic groups.

I do not think Jesus was black. Please take a look at any native Jew and you would know what he must have looked like. Besides, even if he was black it hardly matters as long as he was the Son of God.

Yea he's always portrayed as Caucasian with such a beautiful long hair. In fact, nobody knows how he looked like. However, considering the condition in the those days, Jesus traveled everywhere by walking, which means he would've exposed to the sun all the time. It is safe to assume that his skin color was dark or tanned. Dark doesn't always mean black. Besides, race wouldn't matter.

Jesus was probably white because the place where he was was white so he's more likely to be white. People think of him as white generally maybe because that's what western people are. It doesn't really matter what his colour is though. Whatever colour he was he's obviously done a good job of making people remember him.
