your boss asks you to lie to your customer when your company didn't meet the schedule you told your customer?

In my past company, we do that often if we don't have a choice but to lie.

Yes, I feel guilty but you cannot tell the customer the real reason. Sometimes you just to alibi cause the real reason may be unethical to say.

There is a difference between lying to the customer & NOT telling them the actual truth. When caught in that situation, I always don't give the customer specific details as to what actually happened. However, I DO apologize to them & tell them I've spoken with my boss & that I'm doing EVERYTHING in my power to assure they NEVER have the same problem again!!! I then go to the weakest link & request that they be MORE careful with ALL my customers. Also, when the affected customer requests the same process again, I walk it through myself bypassing the weak link thereby assuring MY customer gets GREAT service the next time!!! That way I've done what the boss requested & not told the customer the absolute truth & I have a satisfied customer who will continue using us!!!

I would probably do the same thing as Alice. In this case, it's a win-win situation. My boss doesn't get a bad reputation, I don't get scolded by my customer, and my customer will walk out of the store okay.

Look to be honest in business the owner or company always lies because there is always hidden this or that, so as an employee that needs their money if it is a small lie you have to do it, i hope one day to have my own business and not do this to my coustomers but when its their company its their way

if you run your own business, you are not the one who lied to customer, you are just the one who ask others do. so not lying to others is a good vision we are aiming to.

As a rational person I would listen to my boss and lie to the customer instead of telling the truth and getting fired for the honestly that I showed.

we all live under certain pressure, so the decision will not be according to what we want, just what we had better to.

no matter what I choose, I will feel guilty. one side is honest, one side is the profit of the company.
