It used to be 'an apple for the teacher' !!

Cakes for the teacher - A much more personal gift than some of the expensive ones given

I was watching a TV programme in the week in which they were discussing the gifts that children take in for their teachers as school breaks up for the summer. It seems in many places here in the UK this has become the latest place to get one up on your neighbours by giving the teacher bigger and better presents - things like jewellery and spa breaks were some of the gifts mentioned. Gone are the days of a few flowers or chocolates for many people, I think that this is absolutely stupid and the practise of giving gifts at all should be stopped if this sort of status climbing is going on. My daughter has two children in junior and infant school where this goes on - instead of buying presents she sent her daughters in with some home made cup cakes for their teachers (picture included) I think that this is a far more sensible idea and I bet they went down well in the staff room!!!

what...?! teachers are getting those kind of gifts now? i know that it's the grateful parents & students prerogative to give a gift to the teacher, but that shouldn't be a competition to see who can give the biggest and most expensive gift. it would really leave a very bad psychological thought in the mind of the kid in the class who is from a poor family and can't afford such gifts and the cupcakes look sweet..can i have one?

and they shouldn't care about emptying their pockets and spending their money just to keep up with the other kids.. there are so many ways of showing appreciation to the teacher. my old teacher always liked the creative surprises me and my classmates come up with. makes it better when everyone is seen to contribute to one common gift from the whole class

@rich: and that's why me & my classmates worked out a way where we can all share in the present..we really didn't want any of our friends to be left out we were all good buddies (i was in an all boys school).. we went to class together, got into mischief together...and got punished together. it was kind of natural for us to share for a nice present for our teacher then

I hate this 'keeping up with the Jones' philosophy that there is now with so many parents - who can give the best party, who can give the best teacher's gift - the poorer kids MUST feel it!!

I agree with you, something home made makes a big difference, it is too easy for some to just go to the shop and buy something from the shelf

Hi Oldchem, I have never sent a present in for the teacher, like you say the teachers do not expect it and I will not get caught up in buying presents for everyone, family and close friends is my limit and a secret Santa at work. The cakes look lovely. Huggles. Ellie :D

Sweet mangoes - seasonal fruits
Hi oldchem1, we to send mangoes to my son teacher and the Principal, its not like a gift but just like a courtesy sake. They never asked us, since it is a season here we distributed to his teachers. Mangoes are very sweet so my son got appreciation.

I would be very pleased to receive some lovely mangoes, but my son loves mangoes so much that I don't know that they'd arrive at school

I have sure enjoyed your daughter's fancy work. I know they were certainly appreciated. You can never give a gift as nice as beautiful handmade items. And hers are an extremely thoughtful and well presented.

When i was in school my mum would take chocolates or flowers in for each of my teachers. I would love to send a kid in with a apple for their teacher to see how they react. When i was in school my teacher not only confiscated a candy bar, but ate it. No wonder kids are becoming unhealthy, the teachers set a bad example.

Hello here on 'Teachers Day' (birthday of one of our president's), we give gifts to our teachers in schools, my mom used to give indian sweets to me, which i gave to my teachers.. In colleges this day is observed too, students give flowers, pen, watch etc as token of their respect.. Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Professor
