I was debating with an individual and he refused to accept the idea that music is as much a part of culture as is food, dress, or religious beliefs. What do you think. Is music an element of culture and if so, does it then define who we are?

Yes music is an element part of culture and it does define who we are take a look in my country, the Philippines, music for us in the form of folk song reflects the everyday life of the Filipinos where in the lyrics of that songs tell stories of their simple lives and how they go about of their everyday lives even linked to nature. One example of that song is entitled "BAHAY KUBO" Who knows this song?

depends on what kind of music, there are sounds, or music that so badly to listen, depends on age of listener. for me, music is an expression of emotions, feel the beat, it will make you cry, dance etc.it is a part of our of our life.

One man's music is another man's racket. Music that may sound bad to you may not sound so bad to someone else. I think Music is one of those cultural symbols that helps express our cultural differences. What do you think?

Hello Ptower. I do believe music is an important part of culture. Wherever we go in the world we will hear different styles of music, they all reflect a certain culture and they're all distinctive in their own way. we can tell a lot about a person by what music they listen to :)
