How many of us are calorie watchers? We had to learn higher maths again, just in case it would help us with the extra pounds. But an article asked me a good question today. Did it say anywhere what kind of calories should I watch? Calories are calories. It´s like money. Don´t tell me that money is for your new shoes: if someone is ill, the money is meds money and the shoes are forgotten. So, going back to calories: what makes you think that you cannot eat a piece of cake? Or a donut (Dawn, chocolate frosted, please)? It´s just that, let´s count calories, we eat a smaller dish of pasta, we change bread for cake instead of eating both. That´s all. The important thing is what you add. But you can add a piece of cake (or a chocolate chip cookie) and eat a tiny bit of the potato, rice or pasta you have for the main dish. How about it? Does it make sense to you? To me it does. And don´t talk about diabetes either. Use a sugar substitute for your cake and just count the flour. People CANNOT live without any kind of carbohidrates. Just pick the one you want.

One chocolate frosted donut coming up... I really haven't been counting calories, but I should. That's how I lost weight before, that and walking a lot.

Walking by itself didn't help enough, but it has other benefits than weight loss.

I bet walking helped you a lot more than the calorie count. I was just having a coffee with one of my cousins (she had black coffee, I ordered capucchino with double cream) and she told me she has 5 kilos less. She was sent to a nutricionist by her doctor and she is supposed to eat bits of food several times a day. But I´m afraid the good foods do not include donuts

we cannot just watch or calculate our calories every time. I think what we have to do is to make a list of food that we eat in a week. We can just make an idea of how much calories we have taken in. I think this can be very helpful. Do you think there is any special device in which we can calculate the calories level in our bodies? I haven't seen any such devices. So we can just use our ideas.

You are right. I was just meaning to say that a good diet includes a nice dessert once in a while so you won´t end with so much anxiety that you´ll forget it all and have a splurge.

Diets are useless. Why count anything? I eat too much too often - that's all. How do I stop? That's what I want to know. The more I think and worry about it the worse I get. And the heavier I get.

i think calorie counting is actually a waste of time. have a rough idea what is a sensible amount to eat, and what is too much, and leave it at that. and occasional treats are good for you

You are right, jb. But I posted this because I know many people take diets so serious that they and with a lot of anxiety. A sensible amount is important but also we need to indulge in luxuries once in a while. That goes for everything. I live frugally yet I love wonderful vacations. I will not give that up if I can!

Hiya margi, Calorie counter I am not much of one but I am careful not to mix everything together. If I eat Pasta I eat salad or apples after. Rafaella Carra wrote a great book about mixing the wrong foods together and she made me think that it did make sense that way I can control my tummy (grin). Since she was on the Tele saying about things like that and I saw the fantastic figure she had I thought she must be right. So now I take more care but I don´t count calories just a rough estimate in my Head will do this is too much and the other is just about right.I never use sugar sweeteners at all though I half the sugar or quarter it but never use the sweeteners I don´t care for the taste of them. Meat is not a thing I eat much of either and I have halved the amount of bread I eat and biscuits too. I love a bowl of hot soup with noodles though by biggest failing especially when it´s cold like over where you are.

I am not that kind of a person where I watched out for calories I eat. I eat and work and burn those extra calories so I eat what ever is presented before. The natural rule of nature is Eat and work. It balance work. Work here means phycial activity where you sweat and burn energy out thus calories, not sitting in the comfora of you sofa and surfing internet.
