I read headline after headine, we need jobs, yet businesses that are now in a profit are not hiring. Their answer: we are afraid of the economy. Guess what? People can't spend money if they don't have a job. What are your thoughts on this question? Prosperous mylotting

It is a tough situation right now, that's true. But, when any for-profit business finds itself in the red due to a poor economy or other reason then they have to do what is necessary to become profitable again. And that means laying off workers. Sometimes they may even have to downsize permanently. It's just the way it all works. No for-profit business is required to hire people if they can't afford to. And it's completely understandable that they are very concerned and maybe even afraid of what the economy may do. Everyone's worried. I work in a factory that supplies parts for the automotive industry and we had a layoff early last year. It was the first time in the company's 20 years of existence that they had a layoff. And they went for as long as they could without laying anyone off. But things just got so bad that they had no choice. Fortunately, now, everyone that was laid off and that wanted to come back has been rehired. And, thank God, business is so good that we are working weekend overtime on a regular basis and have even had to work on some holidays this year. But, a lot of businesses aren't doing as well, as we all know. They can't hire or rehire people even if they wanted to. Not until the economy improves, if it ever does. And that's just the hard reality of it all.

Herro dogsnme I understand what you are saying. My question is that many companies are not in profit, like banks and Ford Motor Company. Why can they not start rehiring a few at a time as a test. Even if they rehired 10-15 every month or two, that would make a tiny dent in the economy. I hear companies returning to profit every day on the news. Maybe minimal profit, however profit. I understand what you are saying, too. But, companies are just not going to hire people either until the demand calls for it or until they begin making a profit again. It just does not work the way you are suggesting. Actually, demand probably has more to do with it than profit does. Some companies that are making a profit again aren't going to hire if there isn't enough demand to justify it. And, companies who are losing money DEFINITELY aren't going to hire people if there is no demand for them to. Plus, 10-15 people is more than you think when it comes to hiring even if a company is making a profit. It costs a lot more money than people think to hire just one person when you consider that there is a training period that they must go through plus giving them insurance and other benefits. And I'm sure that there are other costs that I'm not aware of. It would be nice if the solution could be as simple as what you are suggesting. But, the economy is very complex and the solutions for reviving a struggling economy are never simple either.

It nuts i've been a stay at home mom for like 5 years and I've been trying to find work for like two years now. It's come to the point were m cousin is finding jobs for me to do online. But for businesses to not hirer when they are makeing money is just going to make them loose money.

Herro ladybugr2d2 Welcome to mylot. May you enjoy the fantastic and educational time I'm having at mylot. Have you tried data entry? Can you write articles. I am not a writer, so that is not an option for me. Check data entry. I have seen lots of opportunities for that. I cannot vouch for any of them. Prosperous mylotting

I have to respond to this one. I live in a small town of 12,000 or so folks and we are not blessed with a lot of big companies that hire a lot of people. We do have jobs available but it seems that people want to start at top management and not as one that sweeps the floor. This past Sunday Paper listed no less than thirty jobs but not one was a high paying top level, people remember you have to start somewhere why do you hold out for the top spots? I started at the bottom position of my chosen field in 1974 and retired second from the top in 2003. So don't be afraid to start at the bottom and work your way up, I did it twice. I am fortunate in that I have finished my career as a law enforcement official a few years ago and am now living on the fruits of that and a sound investment program. No the downturn did not destroy my savings, I was lucky, I saw it coming and was able to convert to Gold most of mine and am now enjoying that decision.

Herro manleyjoe Right on, however, you and I come from a different time period. We were taught work ethics, values, ethics, etc. I do live in a large city, however most of the jobs are retail, food service, hospitality or requiring a specific education, such as nursing. I started at the bottom in 2 careers. Retired from the military and started as a volunteer in a nonprofit agency. I worked my way to a staff counselor and left thee to open my private practice. I closed the practice due to a back injury. Since that time, had cancer. I am disabled due to cancer and neurological problems. Prosperous mylotting

The problems are that you don't want to be the first or the only business that is hiring, only to find out that the economy is going to take another downturn, as that will pretty much put an end to the business. I think business should slowly start to rehire people, possibly rehiring the people that had to go due to cash problems?

Herro fpsninja What a fantastic idea. Now if we could just convince businesses to see that the idea was valid. I understand their apprehension, however, someone has to take the first step to get the economy restarted. Prosperous mylotting
