Investing in the stock market

I was just wondering from all my fellow Americans if anyone invests in the stock market without the use of a broker(online) and if yes what sites do you use to purchase and sell shares? I am interested in starting to buy some shares but not sure where to start even though I have my eyes on certain companies and sectors.
I am not looking to trade Forex as I feel its too risky but just for old times sake, any good sites to trade Forex that accept PayPal?

I miss Birejji. 
We use a broker, none of that newfangled stuff. Then again, it won't be "we" much longer, and then maybe I'll be doing things differently.
