Is it that easy to be successfull in America?

Everywhere you look specially in Cinema, it appears to be easy to be successfull, a lot of actors easily create production companies, and there are a lot of rich people, there are just so many success stories in the US i just wanted to ask US citizens out there "How is life there?" "Is it that good?

I am not from US and I dont live there however I have a friend who is staying there and working. He told me that life there is not doing any good. A lot of people where actually struggling just to survive for a day. Maybe because of the recession. I was thinking that recession would be over since the pres Barak Obama promise the people to end this recession.
