home office lost my passport!

I have recently applied for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK recently after qualifying for it. Me and my mother applied for it together and posted it in the same envelope. You post the documents to Durham and then it goes to the croydon branch as those of you who are Familiar with the process may know. SO a few weeks ago my mum recieved an acknowledgement that her documents have been received whereas i did not get one so i called the home office and they said that there were no documents or a passport under my name. They told me to write a letter to the home office and ask them to search for it which is lame considering i am speaking to a person working there on the phone. Seriosuly, you want me to write a letter to you? Then i googled some keywords and viola In 2008 it was reported that the home office lose about 5 passports a day in department transfers. How incompetent can such an important department be? and they tod me if i lost my passport i would have to make a new one and that they arent responsible so i would have to spend roughly around £150 for making a new passport not to mention that my visa expires in six months and the process for indefnite leave takes about 6 months. Anyone had such a similar experience or know of any?
