My friend told that desktop consumes more power rather than laptop because of the monitor but i didn't agree. Is it right that Laptop consumes less power!?!?!? Mine is 6 Years old desktop and it is bit slower now. Is there any such external hardware or software feature where i can make my desktop computer bit speeder.

If you cannot afford Laptop then use TFTs with the Desktops as it consumes less energy.

There are some ways to increase the speed of your desktop. just do disk defragmentation, delete temporary files. you have mentioned it as 6year old desktop.so its configurations may be old. try with new operating systems or go for additional RAM. laptop consumes more power because it has many features in built within it. a fully charged laptop cannot be used for long time.

Desktop consumes more power than laptop for sure, as desktop have SMPS, and processor fan of much more power. And it is so obvious as laptop being a portable computer it will definitely consume less power. On the other hand desktop exceeds laptops performance wise,if you run your desktop for a whole day it will not affect it but the same will not be expected from laptops.

That is a difficult question to answer because it depends what is in your desktop or laptop. Faster processors tend to consume more power than slower, older ones and the type of processor also effects the power consumption. Then, what is attached? Do you have multiple hard disks, separate or combined CD/DVD, webcam, etc.? How many sticks of memory? There are just too many variables to give a straight answer. On a desktop, many people have a too small power supply unit and the computer drags along at a slow pace because it is starved of power. Typical economy desktops come with 145 watt power units whereas they really need 300 watts or more. Up to 800 watt psu's are available for those who have added lots of extra cards and disks. Can you make a six year old PC faster? Probably not!

It may be true that a desktop uses more power, but a laptop needs a battery, which needs replacing quite frequently if you plan on using it on the go, so i wouldn't necessary say that the laptop is the more ecofriendly option. YOu also have to take into account that most pc's are higher spec than the laptops, and you can buy more efficent screens these days as well.

ok the best way to speed up your old computer is to first format it fully than purchase(if you dont have) windows 7 there disable all the visual effects and extra windows features and you will find it lightning fast. Abhishek Jain
