Yesterday I got a nasty virus or trojan in my laptop, and it was disguising itself as windows security alerts. I would not let me do anything, I could not even restore or check to see where it was hiding. I finally got fed up and had to manually reset my computer. My grandson told me about a free program that he is using and it works great! It is called 'avast'. Does anyone else use this program, if not who do you use? Do you pay a company such as Norton for your anti virus protection program?

Hi irishmist, I feel sorry that the disgusting trojan had caused trouble to your laptop. I don't have any knowledge to coop with the pc virus. Earlier my problem occurred due to the unknown virus happened to harbor in my laptop. I seemed like handicapped and didn't know what to do. My son works in another state and I didn't want to disturb him by calling him I then sent my laptop to the computer shop then. It's rather disappointed that the technician didn't back up all the files and folders in the hard disk driver C. I felt really sad when I found all of them were no longer available in my laptop anymore. I doubted about their professional level. They should back up everything before to coop with the virus and should get everything to be restored as before. At the moment I have got all the important stuffs, especially pictures which I had taken during foreign vocation saved in the new volume E. Happy posting and have a nice day

I always have my pics backed up, but sometimes my music I lose, but I eventually get it back. That is to bad that you lost all that stuff that was important to you. I feel like my computer is my diary.

You are smart and doing all the precaution to keep your valuable pics backup safely. It's really a great pain to lose precious stuffs which could never gain back again. It seems that I'm learning from life experience. I spend majority of my leisure time sitting in front of my laptop

free programs like avg doesnt do something and even make your pc slow its better to get a licensed virus protection program these certifies you away from viruses and malwares.

free programs make a pc slow!!!!! get real renzmago, you sound to me some reseller!!! irish, simply take backup of your data files, note down all the softwares you have installed, reinstall your os and other softwares and get Eset Nond 32 or 64 (whatever ur machine is) have been using Eset since past 4 years and nothing watsoever (subject to the updates which one can get online only, for free ofcourse) Norton Enterprise is installed at my office, where i work, we have paid in millions and still every week there is some virus attack. That's how the paid softwares and that also big names, work buzz me for whatever your pc solution needs, hardware, os, softwares.

Avast is a decent antivirus program. it is one of the recommended antivirus by experts. personally, i prefer AVG though. it is also free and i have never had problems with it. you should always have an antivirus running all the time. it keeps your computer safe. also, update it frequently so you do not miss out on any updates. make sure to only download on legitimate sites too. there are a lot of fraud sites which provides users access to files which are made to look like these legitimate antivirus so be careful.

So far I am happy with the program, it is running right now, plus it tlaks to me and I love it, no annoying popups like with mircosoft security alerts, which never do me any good.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareByts and Spybot Search & Destroy to get rid of viruses, I also run scans once a week to make sure there's nothing on my computer. A complete reformat and System Restore does not always get rid of virues. if you can't get it off with a free antivirus, then you should take it to a computer expert.

I have heard good things about Avast but never got them myself, though I should because my current AntiVirus has expired and I don't really feel like paying for it again if I don't have to. Just thought I'd but this out there.. http://www.geekpolice.net/ is a GREAT site for all things computer-related, virus-related, and antivirus-related. They require you to sign up to enable links, but they have help through a few computer problems and they are a free alternative to BustBuy's GeekSquad, provided you don't mind fixing the problem yourself.

I would never buy a program, especially if I have to pay for a subscription.

Welcome to Windows! Except it isn't Windoze anymore, it's just a lookalike. That is what this type of virus does. Antivirus programs rarely catch it in time and once activated, there is nothing you can do. Re-install Windows only after deleting and reformatting your hard disk. Program on the Internet? Yes, it's there, but what use is it when your computer's already out of your control! Do yourself a favor and switch to Linux or BSD operating systems for connecting to the Internet. Leave Windows for your games and entertainment.

This happened to me last week, and I don't know what to do about it. I cannot even open an explorer to go on the internet and load something for free. How did you reset your computer? I have been using my husbands computer and he is not happy because he thinks I will infect his computer as well.

Tell me what kind of computer you have. I have a Dell laptop. in general this is what you can try. Shut computer totally down, then re start it, but you must quickly hit F8,located at the top of the keyboard. Select Repair computer, press enter, then choose from the menu how you want to repair your computer. Just follow the directions, and it will then take you to your log in password. If this does not work, you make have to do a complete factory restore which will clean out your computer and you will lose everything. I hope this helps. Let me know.
