My First Tip Ever

I guess quite many of my friends over here already know my profession. I used to work in the hospital as a nurse and receiving a tip is truly a BIG NO NO. But right now i am a company nurse in a hotel and resort. I could remember the first tip i had which really took the whole of me into silence. I didn't want to take it, but the guest's face was already into grimace and I realized maybe I would have offended them. So I had it and talked to my mom about the guilt feeling of accepting the money. My mom and one friend just laughed at me saying it was normal. My first tip ever was really embarrassing and receiving some these days still make me feel a bit embarrassed or shy.

i understand how embarrassing you felt when you accepted something because you were used to the hospital policies and stuff..i am a nurse too and i used to work in the hospital.. i had a very kind patient and on the day of her discharge.., she told me i'm her favorite nurse and would like to show her gratitude..asking me what i would like and i smiled..telling them it's not necessary and it's my duty to take care of her... but when i came back to the room.., she handed me a large bar of imported chocolate... she told me that she knew i wouldn't be accepting any cash and she wouldn't accept it if i refuse it... so as to not to hurt her feelings i ate it when i went home..hahaha

I like this story. Nurses are just like waitresses, the only difference is what they serve. If you were really a good nurse, I believe you deserved that chocolate bar! I wonder if I get any tips when I work (no matter where). By the way, I recently found out that doctors/surgeons get tips too. o.O

hmmm..thank you... i can't give you any tips..but all i did was took care of my patient..(hip fracture) sincerely and made sure that i attended to all her needs especially because she couldn't move her lower body without crying because of pain..she was very vulnerable and she told me i was the only nurse who took care of her and communicated with her while doing so..=) so surgeons get their tips too? interesting..,maybe they deserved more than a bar of chocolate because they handle situations more difficult than i nurses have..=)

I think it is very natural to feel shy and embarrass as well when we do things we are not used to do. Tip from costumers is not bad and it is heartily given in my opinion. It is their way of saying their thanks in a deeper meaning. There is nothing wrong to accept token of appreciation, could it monetary or materially. Have a good day always

perhaps you where too afraid to receive the money during that time isn't it. Oh how I wish to experience that to, perhaps if only I would have the chance to work with a hotel then I will also experience receiving a tip as what you have experienced too. Well, base on others experienced and base on what i read in some online blog site, tips are that natural for you to receive and you should be thankful for that.

There is nothing wrong with that. Its not like you begged for the tip. If anything you should feel good that you did so well that she gave it to you(Not insulting you). I dont know why you feel so guilty but you should definitly shake it off. Feel good for your good work. Another thing you could do is take that tip money and buy your parents a gift. That makes them happy and you dont get the money. In the end accept all tips you work for

Hello hushi22! First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your first tip ever and I hope it will be one of many tips you will receive. When you were a nurse in hospital, tips shouldn't be given nor they should be received because it may seem as a bribe. But now, when you work for a company, you really shouldn't feel guilty when receiving a tip. Tip is reward for your effort, quality of the service you provide and things you've done to make the customer satisfied. Every service has it's price, but when you make that service even better you should be rewarded and you don't have to feel embarrassed or shy about it, be happy because you made someone happy! Take care and happy mylotting! --Fadolf

I understand exactly what you're talking about. Sometimes I'll be at the restaurant and while paying the bill I'll give a tip to the restaurant manager. To me, It's totally okay for me to do that cause I feel it's a humble thing to do. Although when I'm given a tip, ex. babysitting my little cousins, I feel ashamed and embarrassed of receiving extra money. It really depends on the situation..
