X is just the Roman numeral for 10, and it is in the name because Mac OS X is the tenth major revision of the operating system. Earlier versions, like System 7 and Mac OS 9 had the number in their in their name as well, just not the Roman numeral.

So that Microsoft can have the Windows XP (released on August 24, 2001).... hahahaha just a wild opinion of mine. "XP" in Microsoft Windows XP is short for "eXPerience". That's why we got Windows 7 and not 10 or 11 and so on. The Apple Mac OS X first version was the Mac OS X Server 1.0 (released on March 16, 1999) followed by the Mac OS X desktop-oriented version (released on March 24, 2001) . Apple Mac OS X introduction was after Apple purchased NeXT and the return of the Jedi master named Steve Jobs. Apple Macintosh computer graphical UNIX based Operating System prominent or famous brand identity were named using Arabic numerals or the versions are called by "systems"... i.e. from Apple Mac OS version or system 1 (released on January 24, 1984) to system 9 (released on October 23, 1999).... After Apple purchase NeXT and the return of Steve Job, Apple Mac OS prominent brand identity is by using the Roman numerals i.e. the Mac OS X (X is the Roman numeral for the number 10). Get that? In other words, from Arabic to Roman. From life to new. Mac OS system or version 1 to 9 are the old and classic Apple Mac OS, Mac OS X is the newest and most advance of all computer Operating System technology until today and beyond.
