Have to create colors?

I have been guessing since a while how do we get colors.. In form of water color or any other form. Its fascinating to view paintings with different brilliant colors but how do we obtain them?

you can try before you use it, try to imagine the color you want to be, I think so .

I was trying to say how to get the primary color itself. Is it extracted from plants or other chemical materials. I don't want to buy my colors, rather making them... e.g how to get a red color from which material?
