Choosing a career: the degree you have earned or just work in a call center?

After graduation, your hopes are soaring high. You have really made it at last after a long hardship of studying in college. Now you have a bachelors degree and you are proud of it. It's now time for a job hunt. Unfortunately, the position on the job you are aiming for has only one or two slots and there are a number of applicants same as your degree are seeking for it as well. So you are now losing your hopes to get that job based on your degree. Would you rather choose a career in the call center or would you still pursue applying for that certain career you were aiming for until you are the lucky person who got picked for the position?

its good to have a job in line to your degree but lets face it, it is really hard to find one!especially nowadays..you have to have backer or someone who has a higher position in a particular company that you want to apply with in order for you to get in,,you have to be a graduate of top 3 school/university in order to be the first choice...but on the other hand be still thankful that you have a job although its not your degree..as long as you have job try to persevere on it because you might not know it,this just a stepping stone!

Hello there maylaine, I marked this a the best response because I was looking for a word or phrase that a call center job would just be a stepping stone for everything that you want to be in the future. Yes this is actually right. If you will be in the call center, you will have lot's of things to know that you will be able to use when you are going to pursue your career based on your degree. Dealing with customers and testing your patience is the number one thing! then your communication skills will be enhanced. another thing is to do multitasking. you will really learn a lot of things aside from what I have stated. thank you for the response and continue sharing those nice thoughts you have.

The most important how-a days is to have a stable work. Wherein you can support needs and expenses of your family. That is why, any work available is welcome especially of its a good paying job and nothing more that we know is working in a call center industry. This type of work doesn't require any bachelor degrees or diplomas. You must only possess good communication skills and good diction.Well, this days this skill is easy to achieve there are English communication trainings wherein, it will enhance our english communication skills. Even degree holders, they also resort to enter in this industry or some doesn't care to continue their studies after graduating in secondary school.

Absolutely true. a stable job is what we need to provide for our family. Well I would just have to add up aside from a good communication skills, they should also have at least average computer skills. I referred somebody who is a college level so i just assumed she has it all until I found out that she failed the computer exam or the computer based exam. So there should be an over all skill when you apply in a call center.

I would prbably take a position just to work and get paid for the time being. Sometimes you have to start from the bottom and work yourself up. We all hope to get that one great job when we graduate but sometimes we have to take the smaller ones first.

When I graduated from college with a bachelors degree, I sent out 50 resumes and got replies from 3. I started feeling like a bachelors degree wasn't worth the paper it's printed on. Of the three interviews I got, I was offered 2 jobs, neither in an area I wanted to work in, but since student loan payments would soon be due, I accepted one of them. I am so glad I did. It turned out to be a very fullfilling position, and I stayed there for several years. I think you should take some kind of a job, but keep looking for a job in your field. Something will open up for you.

I think it's makes sense to choose a career that's aligned to the course you took in college. After all, that's what we want right? Unfortunately, there's not enough position that companies can offer to recent graduates. I work in a call center for about 5 years now. And yes, it was the easy option for me. But it has been very rewarding. I started out as an agent and got promoted after 6 months. I am now a Trainer. And being paid good compared to others, I think. So, yes, you can make a career in a call center. It's really up to you. A lot of people apply in call centers to pass time while looking for a stable job. But for me this is a stable industry.

Hey aaronfyzeon! Personally, i would recommend of pursuing first on the degree that you earned. Try to apply as long as you can... and if all fails then try the other option. If you are worried that the slots is only limited to one or two then its your chance to reinvent and upgrade yourself.. You need to be edgy so that you will get the one or two slot. Think positive. I am working in a call center but prior to it i did work on the job that i earned in college.. there are reasons why i work in a call center.. but i am looking forward of working and going back to what I have earned in college.. there is nothing more fulfilling than working on the job that you have earned for years...

I hate to admit it but i have been stuck with my call center job for almost 2 years now. I have tried to work with my profession but for only a short period of time because of agreement reasons with the employer. After the agreement and even after the volunteering stuff i end up going back to being a customer service representative. I really don't have any choice, i don't want to just sit at home and wait for all my applications to be read. I need a job, and call centers are the once that are hiring everyday and accepts anybody just as long as you know how to speak English. But I would really love to work with my profession, what's the 4 years hard work of studying if you just end up answering phone calls?! :/

In my country, China, finding a job is also very difficult. It is said here that the best way to find job is to seek a horse when you are riding on a donkey, which means if one can't find a ideal job after graduation, he/she should first get a not-too-bad job to feed himself/herself, and try to seek the ideal job when working. I agree this point of view. But for me it will not be in call center because I am not good at talking at all.

I'll choose to pursue my bachelors degree but not as if I'm gonna waste the rest of my life hunting for the job like a needle in a pile of rice hulls. If being a call center is the only choice why not? There are lots of great opportunity having this career. Time is so precious and I believed that there is always a right time for everything. I'm not saying that I'm gonna junk my degree, I just want to work with all the given. ;)

Well, if you really really love the career you want based on your degree and has no financial pressure to earn as soon as possible (if your single with no obligations that is) then pursue it. But it's different if you really need a job to pay your obligations, then go for the job that will pay you well but at the same time in a career path that you'll be comfortable with.

There are so few jobs I would take whatever if I could stand to do it, and continue to look. Employers do not look with favor on someone that hasn't worked in a long time. They would rather see that you took something, even though it might not be your ideal job, rather than doing nothing and waiting for the "perfect" job. In other words, take the job at the call center, you can always quit when you get something better.

I would say, there is a reward with patience and persistence. If you CAN afford to wait for the career you want to build, you have to wait for it patiently and consistently trying. I ahve seen this with a friend of mine who did not work in a call center.. i think it was about 5 or 6 months before she was able to find herself a work related to our course... by that time, of course most of us have already accepted the call center jobs - and most of the people are now still stuck in BPOs, call centers, etc. I would really hope that you get to your career path one step at a time, starting with the correct way to go from day 1. Most of the time, the system will eat you up and you will find it harder and harder to get out of your current post. ;) think about it.... hope this helped your decision.

I worked only once in a call center, and I will never work in a call center again unless I become desperate. I have a job now in the field of the course I finished, so I guess I'm OK. I really don't want to go back to working as a call center agent. I hate everything in that job! I hate the night shift, the environment, and the work itself.

Hi, Having a degree is a good achievement. At least, you have taken up your first step.and After graduating,it is time to join the workforce society. Find a good and suitable job is not easy. There are many young graduates out there and competition is always there. So always get yourself upgrade and having an additional points might lead you to get a better job in society. Working in call center is not bad, good pay. The problem is need to work on shift. I used to work in call centre at the bank.Their salary is good and of course provide a good benefits too. However, this call centre job is not that easy.pretty stressful and everyday has to talk and talk to different kind of people out there. Every job will have its own stress line and we can't make a comparison. As long as you feel comfortable with your current job, then no point to look for other job first. Of course,if there is a good opportunity offered to you,you can always consider to hop to another better job.

I am currently doing neither. I am a registered nurse but after I volunteered in the hospital I realized that dont want to be a nurse. So now, I am tutoring basic English to Koreans. I have no plans on working at a call center, but I dont know what will happen in the future. If I dont have any other job, maybe ill try a call center, but I dont think that will happen though. I really wanted to have a business on my own, maybe I'll concentrate on that.

For me there nothing wrong on having a degree and work for in call center as long as you love what you do and you create money in a respectable way.Now a days you have to be practical just assume to your self that this is not time for your pursued career.Give time to your self pursue your career while earning good money.
