getting a new bike...

I think I got enough money for my b-day to go get a bike. I can't get a really expensive one, but I can get a decent "no name" one to ride around town! Any suggestions on things to look for, I haven't bought a bike in a long time, like years! I am thinking a slimmer bike as I have a trail bike tucked away in another state and will be able to retrieve it some day! I was thinking a slimmer lighter weight bike would be good for the around town stuff I plan on doing. Whatcha think? Should I go with a nice trail bike instead.. they are more versatile!
