Working at a call center is rewarding and exciting. You have the opportunity to meet a lot of people, your officemates and their friends, and you get to practice your English on a regular basis. But when you are assigned on the graveyard shift, or the night shift, it can sometimes be uneasy specially if you have been working the 9-5 schedule for the past years. Guys do you have some tips to fend off sleepiness while working on a night shift???

Do you sleep during the day? If not then I could see how it would be hard to stay awake. It may be hard to stay awake too if no one is around and the call volume is low. Are you allowed to read at your desk, do crossword puzzles, surf the internet? I had a job once where the call volume was very low and I brought in books and crossword puzzles to do. We were allowed to do this as long as we took the calls when they came in. It did help the day go by faster.

Sometimes I go for a walk outside too and it really helps wake me up. Not sure if I would want to do that at night though.

It's good to hear that you combat your sleepiness with that method. Also, when I am given an hour of break, I spend time going to the pantry or breathing some fresh, night air outside your office. Flex some muscle, do stretching. Now, I'll avoid being idle in my station because it will surely cause sleepiness. (this is a promise to myself) Good day to you! :)

Now you're talking!! I work the midnight shift and I love it!! You'll tend to like it soon enough.. The positive thing to think is to think there will not be any traffic that you need to go through!! Second thing is, you get to those things that the other people can't do like go to the bank and settle your bills during the day time and go shopping without a crowd.. So, here's some tips.. 1) You need to slowly adjust your time, for the first few weeks, you'll be tired, so get as much sleep as possible. O 2) Get coffee, if you don't drink coffee, eat an apple a day before you start work.. :) That will keep you awake. Note: It does help if you are a night person.. hehhe, but you'll be fine!! :)

Thank you so much for the information. I will take not of that. Regarding coffee, my good friend also told me to prepare a hot, aromatic cup of coffee. If you are into it, drinking coffee during your graveyard shift will surely help you keep awake. Maybe it’s the chemicals in the coffee that stir our senses and keeps our eyes wide open, but whatever it is, it will surely help us. :) Good day to you!

Yes, the coffee aroma actually awakes your senses.. :) And yes, if you're not a coffee person, try tea or an apple! :)

That's why I hate Noc shifts in the hospital too. Even after months of work, I still wasn't able to adjust to it. I didn't fight off the sleepiness. I really slept! I am sure you have tried coffee. Some will bring along those puzzles whatever you call them.

I also hate Noc shifts but I am learning to love it :). For me, it wouldn’t be easy to change the biological clock inside your body once you start working on a night shift. Even if you have spent the whole day in your bed, sleep sometimes knocks on your back at night. Then there’s headache or feeling of dizziness. But once you get used to working at night, it will be just the same as working at day. (this is my workmate's point of view) Have a nice day my friend!

ear plug - buy one and put it in your ear before you sleep.
Hello juneramir, I missed the night shift. the first ever operations training i had nothing more than a headache since it was my first time to sleep in the morning. I like that schedule but trouble for me before is that I am always late, not once but twice a month i think. but when i was reset to 10pm to 6pm or 11pm to 7am, it was alright because i had time to adjust. One advice, sleeping in the morning takes time. better yet, look for a store and by "ear plugs" to prevent yourself from hearing too much noise. that was my experience once, and don't drink coffee, probably milk. Biological clock for your body to sleep in the morning takes time.

I'll consider your suggestion my friend. Allow me to give you one tip that my workmate also told me. I hope this works for you. Start your shift on a positive mood. Don’t think that you will be feeling sleepy in the next 4 or 5 hours because you might. As much as possible, don’t think that you are working on the graveyard, think that you are working the 9-5 schedule. Good day :)

I have been doing the graveyard shift for almost 5 years now. There's no sure fire way to beet sleepiness as our body was really made to sleep at night. But for me, sleeping during the day really helps.

I have to agree with you my friend. We should have a good rest during day time. Of course, since you are already working at night, you should spend your day like it was your night time when you were still working on the day shift. Have a good rest. Sleep for at least 6 hours. Don’t do tiring works. Good day to you!

You will need to condition yourself for the night shift. Initially it is difficult. Dont think about the time of the day. When you go to office, wish all Good Morning instead of Good Evening. All the time think that you are fresh and active. Take care for food too. Make sure you drink a lot of water. Make sure you get 6-7 hours sleep at a time. It will take about 3-4 months to get adjusted and then you will love the night shifts. You can get a lot of day time to do other work which others need to take a leave to do. Happy working!!!

If you are going to sleep in the day then you will really not feel sleepy at night. I am guilty of having a short naps in between calls that would last for at least 15 mins. My suggestion is if your shift would start 9pm to 5am, when you reached home, do not sleep right away. spend time first with your family. Then at 12 noon you go ahead and sleep so that by 6pm or 7pm as you wake up, you will really feel the vigor of going to work. It would just be the same as having an 8am - 5pm normal shift wherein you wake up at 6am so you will start your work at 8am. I also agree of drinking coffee before your shift starts.
