Why do Filipinos make fun of how you look?

If they learned what racism and stereotypes are maybe they will think twice of what they are saying to people. Not only that it is hurtful but it is offensive. When I was a kid I have witnessed the way they make fun of people with darker skin, I guess that is how America was during the segregation days. Maybe its just for fun and people don't really care. So why does it happen? I can still see these things when I watch TFC. Maybe it is part of the fun.

I don't watch TFC so i don't exactly know what you're saying. But you know for me personally i feel that the Pinoys are one of the nicest people in the planet not because Im Pinoy but i felt that we are more accepting, we are also forgiving, were very family centered, we always look up to those who are older than us and generally we are tolerant. Yes we tend to tease people on how they look because perhaps Physical looks is the first thing that we see or noticed. Kids are mean and adults like to compare a lot. But it can also be said to other race or nationalities. You mentions the Americans and we all know they are not particularly proud of that part in their History. Women in other countries are second class citizen, gays also have problems dealing with discrimination. I watched comedies and I hear a lot of jokes about physical appearances big fat momma or your momma is so ugly joke or nose is like of Pinocchio and those are not Pinoy Joke. So I'm just saying its not just us Pinoy its a worldwide phenomenon.

hello GFP, Not particularly with Filipinos alone. It is an individual behavior. My mom is a racists i can say,she don't like dark skinned ( my suitor before)and i am not (that is why i married a dark skinned ) Besides,i don't see any fun for making fun with other people esp with their flaws (who's perfect anyway?...my grandpa maybe becoz his name is Perfecto hehehe) Happy Sunday and have a good weekdays ahead

you know filipino, we are always making fun of everything we see and they call it "okray". Sometimes filipino do this thing because we can't do anything to make fun and like an ice breaker, or sometimes we do it because we are afraid that other people make fun of us, so we initiate to do one. Just go with the flow, and enjoy the way you look as others do. hehehhe!!!!!

I personally think it's a defense mechanism. Haven't you noticed that on TV most of the people who make fun of other not so good looking individuals are the ones who don't look good themselves.

I guess it's a stigma we still carry from our past. Our conquerors had made fun of us,labelling us in the most impolite means, calling us indios and monkeys. To make-up for this, we engage in same the way not knowing it's our fellow we're hurting and demeaning.Learning to respect one is still one lesson Filipinos must learn and master!

I don't know the accurate reasons but it depends on people or the things that I've observe with them. Some are making fun of others because that is the only way they could think that they are better than the others. Some of them are just insecure to themselves that is why they would make fun of others. Others thought that they are perfect or they have all the things that others can't have. There are people that are really heartless to think that they might offend other people.

Making fun of other individual because of their appearance is deeply routed in our culture. However I think that people who are being laughed at or joked at don't really take it as offensive and hurtful. They just go with the flow just to see other people will get happy. Filipino's by nature are happy people.

Its part of Filipino culture I guess..We Filipinos can't deny the fact that most of us really think so much about what others look..and vice versa, we often think about what others think of us..There are really some who would joke around people with disabilities, and those who doesn't look normal for their preferences.. These people should think about themselves first..If they think they look normal, well then they should rate themselves mentally..They might look physically normal, but do are they mentally normal?????
